Jess Goodhew's profile

Forbidden Fiction.

The written word is the most powerful tool on Earth. Books can spread ideas, influence people and cause great offence. Once a book is banned a sort of aura of mystique is created around it that, more times than not, draws readers who want to decide for themselves whether it is in fact unfit for publication.

It is surprising to learn that many novels, which we regard today as works of classic fiction have previously been banned and still, continue to be challenged today. I have designed a collection of illustration depicting individual novels that have been prohibited after publication. The reasons behind its ban are expressed through the images and quotes which link to the book. The aim of this project is to raise awareness about censorship in relation to books and how it inhibits the reader. By censoring specific parts in each of my designs, my intention is to educate and persuade the reader to read more novels that have shaped the literature world today and develop their own opinions.

- Riso printed set of 18 illustrated books put together in a french-fold A4 book in chronological order of each individual book's release date.
- Also contains 18 inserts which provide information behind the novels reason for being banned.
- Set of book jacket covers.
