Latest commission: Another diver.
Client chooses the format, and wants me to paint a diver that I've already sold. So what do I say? "Of course I'll paint it again.
Step one: Using a Paxiscope I project the image onto the canvas and draw the basic lines. Transferring the photo with a grid takes way too much time and I'm very busy...
Step two: first layer of paint. Keep putting more on till you think the right values are beginning to appear.
Step three: Same with the fingers fingers and hand. Hands are pretty hard to do well.
Step four: Check the values again, adjusting the gradient from light to dark.
Step five: The outer lines were too harsh. So I went in and added a sfumato around the edges to soften the lines. Added purple to the shadows. The clouds were too bright, so I softened them.
Delivered the painting. Client was very happy.
