LAST CHANCE U
This series of artwork was inspired by the Netflix documentary series, “Last Chance U”.
“Last Chance U” focuses on the football program at East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) and a behind-the-scenes look at the world of college football. Many of the players recruited to play at EMCC have been removed from high level football college rosters due to academic or disciplinary issues. Players from all over the country come to EMCC to prove themselves and return to elite college football schools.
The players at EMCC have a variety of football uniform combinations that they wear for games. The all black uniform and the matte black helmets with the skull and crossbones on it was the uniform that really stood out to me. The skull and crossbones have been apart of the history of EMCC dating back to the '50s when they used leather helmets. The coach that introduced the skull and crossbones was Robert Victor “Bull/Cyclone” Sullivan. He believed that using soft, leather helmets with a skull and crossbones painted on the front would rattle the opposing team. Sport illustrated has called him the `The Toughest Coach There Ever Was’.
The concept below focuses on the many players that have come and gone through the EMCC program. The goal of many of the players it to make it out of East Mississippi in pursuit of higher football aspirations, but many don’t. When the game is over and the crowds are gone, it’s about the choice these players make and their struggle to find redemption.
