City Of Nanaimo Website Redesign

City Of Nanaimo
Nanaimo is located on the east side of Vancouver Island off the southwest coast of British Columbia and is the largest North American island in the Pacific Ocean. The Vancouver Island/Coast region is the second most populous economic region in the province, accounting for 17.6% of the provincial population, covering 9.1% of the total provincial land mass. Nanaimo’s City Council realized it was time to update city’s 9 years old website in order to facilitate the access of public information and meet current web standards.

Project Background
Along with having a poor mobile experience, Nanaimo’s past website was hard to read, had a poor navigability and was costly to update. The city needed a new dynamic website to showcase the community, city and brand, reducing support costs and providing a good experience no matter the device. Furthermore, the content was overhauled and reorganized for better user understanding, being divided by topics and not departments. Lastly, the website was developed using Sitefinity CMS.

Home Page Design
Nanaimo’s website committee crafted a multitude of requirements for this project, such as website references and visual identity, in-page features, footer navigation, W3C accessibility requirements, home page slider and CTAs.

Navigation Colours
For visual cues, new brand-matching colours were added to each section. The different colours are used on the main and side menu, page headers and footer.

Overview and Content Page
Clear separation between menus and content, visible underlined links and extra-comfortable type size, type color and leading.

Mobile Website
We also customized the mobile experience, putting the most important content on top and improving the hamburger menu navigation.
