University of the West Indies Corporate Identity

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
This identity redesign is the result of a semester-long project in my Corporate Identity class. The University of the West Indies or UWI for short, is a university with a "unique Caribbean perspective".

It has physical 3 campuses on three different islands: Mona, Jamaica, St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago and Cave Hill, Barbados. UWI also has a virtual campus, called Open Campus. Each campus has its own logo that it would use on its own materials. They can be seen below.

MY APPROACH
I dropped the 'The' in 'The University of the West Indies' to reinforce the approachable feel and stand out among its more formal competition.

THE LOGO
The UWI wave or 'W' is made up of the shape of the Caribbean Sea repeated and reflected on itself. The colours are also inspired by the Sea. This logo represents the university as a whole. I wanted the new identity to be modern and approachable, with a Caribbean feel.  The typeface is Avenir, in Medium and Book weights.

The yellow is based on Jamaica’s flag.
The red is based on Trinidad & Tobago’s flag.
The dark blue is based on Barbados’ flag.
The purple represents
technology and openness.

THE WAVE
The UWI wave, separated into solid colours of blue and green is used to form various patterns. In pattern form, the overlapping shapes represent unity and diversity. The wave and wave pattern adorns the stationery and other collateral.
