The Grand Budapest Restaurant

The new Wes Anderson piece is around the corner, but this project is still inspired by the last one: The Grand Budapest Hotel. I'm a Hungarian, I live in Budapest, so the last title felt, well, quite personal. The art direction of the nazi era was particularly interesting with the pink colour and it inspired me to do a little experiment with another 'iconic' (not the best word, I know) era: the Communism. How would a restaurant from those ages look like in a Wes Anderson movie?
The pelican bird is an homage to A tanú (The Witness), Péter Bacsó's satire film of Communism. The main character, József Pelikán's lines definitely built in our everyday lives...
Probably the best part of the project was the designing of the patterns. It was interesting to create something decorative from typical symbols like wheat, tools, gears and of course, the star. The BBB stands for a classic greeting from those years: "Bort, búzát, békességet!" (translates to something like: "Wishing you plenty of wine, wheat and peace!")

Special thanks to Brigi & Encsi.
