About the Great Dane

The president of MLE Merchandising & Sign Solutions, Mike Loftus enjoys spending his free time with his family. MLE's Mike Loftus and his wife have three children as well as four dogs, two of which are Great Danes.

The Great Dane is a gentle giant. At least 28 inches tall at the shoulder, the average Great Dane weighs between 110 and 175 pounds. Underneath this massive exterior is a loving heart. The Great Dane loves to follow its owner through his or her day and join in all household activities, and it does not like to be alone.

Great Danes are not hyperactive dogs, though their enthusiasm for life means that they need to learn boundaries at an early age. The young Great Dane must learn not to jump on visitors and, even as it gets older, should receive close supervision when playing with small children.

Because Great Danes are relatively laid back for large dogs, they are ideally suited to apartment living. They do just fine with a few walks a day, though they enjoy free exercise as much as the next dog. Loyal as well as strong, they also love and excel at agility and obedience events.
