H! workshop at EASA2017 - Hospitylity in Fredericia, Denmark
What is H!
Our world is a compex system, where different stories frequently meet. Like parallel realities in spacetime. Concepts have different meanings in cultures, as so in the level of individuals. Alternative truths exist. It’s not only a question of languages: individuals have different perceptions and conclusions. It is needed to clarify the meaning of basic words in order to have an understanding discussion. Communication is even harder between cultures. Simple gestures can be taken wrong, people can easily be hurt with the nicest intention.
Let’s take a step back from the so-called phenomenon ‘migration’, and imagine the first meeting of a human being and a 5th dimension space-robot on the edge of our Solar system. The unknown is frightening, and communication seems to be impossible. The first intention is to express peace. It can only be hoped that handshake is a friendly act in their galaxy.
Saying “Hi!” is an everyday routine, but looking closer, it has a complex meaning. It means “I’m here”, “I noticed you”, and “I have peaceful intentions”. It is important, to say hi. Or “szia”. Or “Namaste”.
Our intention is to open a communication channel, where strangers can send abstract messages to each other without using a language. The content can not be expressed by words, it is coded in light, colours and frequencies. This code is new to everyone, compensating the unequal relation between locals and newcomers, be it an EASA student, or a refugee.
We developed a concept of a system consisting of a row of light tubes, and an easy-to-use control panel. The system enables people to express emotions by a simple compositon of colours and frequencies, but first of all, to express a clear evidence of existence, to say hi.
The installation can form diverse shapes, depending on urban situations, and on-sight research.
