The purpose of this project was to communicate the meaning of words only using the characters which make up the words. While relying on imagery and illustration was prohibited, being creative and finding ways to manipulate the characters was not. The characters could contain characteristics like texture, color, and more to express the meaning of the word if it was absolutely necessary. We were to consider the term as if we didn't know its meaning and expand on it.
While working on preliminary sketches, I researched type and expression on Behance and other sources. After researching artist with extensive skills in editing and creating type and artist who effectively expressed the terms in simple form, I found myself in between. Light how to research turned into the formation of the refined sketches. I wanted to create terms with paint brush effects, 3D type, shadows and more. Working through layouts and experimental typefaces, I didn't want to become limited and stuck on one idea. I started creating. I started to expand on the ideas shown in the refine sketches.
Creating the designs weren't as easy as planned. I learned the simplest way is usually more effective; however, my journey entailed a lot of research on how to effectively use certain tools. Again, I was studying how to's on creating effects like liquid, thick realistic paint strokes, raised type, conceptual type and more. I wanted to emphasize the expression of the terms the best I could. I adopted a lot of the information I was learning and started applying it to what I felt was necessary. While utilizing the tools in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Spark I was able to work through issues such as the format, typeface, color choice and more. As I referred back to inspiration art I noticed artists were utilizing serifs, opacity, scale transformation, shadows and more for expression and started to adopt the some of the practices.
Overall, I realized ambition can be simple. The focus is the message and its portrayal. Consider the effectiveness and if it works. The design elements exist to help with consistency and flow. I'm learning how to consider the simpler form and understand its true power. I'm constantly amazed by the attitude and character of type. The role isn't to just look pretty, but it is our language and how we perceive the world around us. I understand communicating that is the overall objective.
