One Image Per Day

Title: Dying Rose 1
Technique: Hand-made Drawing
Process: Pen to paper
Reasoning: Wanted to take the idea of time passing and display it in the d of a rose. In this image sequence, the three images reveal the time of beauty, the time of aging and the time of death for this rose, and this shows how time has affected this flower and how death affects all living things.
Reflection: What worked well was the original concept and idea, and it was fortunate that the drawing skills were able to make it look realistic. However, the shading of the image could have been improved. The aim was to try and make it look three-dimensional with the shadowing, but this didn’t work in some areas.
Title: Dying Rose 2
Technique: Hand-made Drawing
Process: Pen to paper
Reasoning: Wanted to take the idea of time passing and display it in the death of a rose.
Title: Dying Rose 3
Technique: Hand-made Drawing
Process: Pen to paper
Reasoning: Wanted to take the idea of time passing and display it in the death of a rose.
Title: Even in Death, there is Regrowth
Technique: Hand-made coloured drawing
Process: Used inspiration from different images to create a piece that focuses on life and death.
Reasoning: The idea for this was to capture life and death in the same image and to show that even in death, there will always be regrowth. No matter the tragedy that has just occurred, something good will always come out of it, and it now has the potential to be even greater than before.
Reflection: This image is one of the best that has been made and has a good concept behind it. It was difficult thinking of what images would best suit life and death, but once they were chosen, creating the piece was a breeze.
Title: Time Passes with Every Step
Technique: Drawing & Illustrator manipulation.
Process: The image of the turtle was drawn on paper and then transferred to the computer and created in Illustrator using the pen tool.
Reasoning: For this image, the aim was to show that even if you stop, time will continue to pass. Nothing ever stops, rewinds or fast-forwards time. All you can do is take it one step at a time (no matter how slow) and if you play your cards right, can hopefully live a very happy life.
Reflection: The creation of the turtle itself worked well for the image, however the sun and the stars around it make the image seem quite basic. But it does get the message across to the viewer.
Title: The Warmth of a Child’s Smile
Technique: Photography
Process: Image was taken quickly in the midst of oncoming human traffic.
Reasoning: This image was taken to show the person’s smile. This child has been through a lot of issues within the family and the aim was to capture that childlike wonder on her face. Even with all of the problems she is facing, she still finds a reason to smile.
Reflection: This image was not very well thought through and was captured quickly whilst out and about. However, the concept still remains the same, the picture needed to focus on her smile and nothing else, which it has done.
Title: A Stranger’s Stare
Technique: Photography
Process: This image was created using reflective red light in a dark room to convey a very eerie and almost unwelcoming feel for the viewer.
Reasoning: The portrait focuses on the stare of the person within the image. With the red light, the viewer could imagine that this person has something bad planned for what she is looking at and essentially plays on the phrase “Never trust a stranger”.
Reflection: What worked well was the lighting and the angle of the image. The positioning of the person was great to help create that eerie feel to the picture. What didn’t work well was the quality of the image as it looks like a low-quality photograph.
Title: Unsureness in One’s Eyes
Technique: Photography
Process: Image was created using bright lights and reflectors to create shadowing and bring out the person’s features.
Reasoning: The concept behind this image stems from the feeling we as university students get. We are unsure about what life will bring and how we will cope with what the future holds.
Reflection: The reflectors used allowed for the best possible lighting to be achieved, that way the look on the girl’s face was apparent and can be seen clearly. It was difficult thinking of a pose for the model to do, but once it was figured out, it provided a beautiful portrait.
Title: Things are Looking Up
Technique: Photography & Photoshop
Process: The image was created using a dark room and two different coloured reflectors to add some shine and help develop shadowing. Photoshop was then used to eliminate a ‘Keep door shut’ sign above the model’s head.
Reasoning: The concept behind this image was to capture the good and the bad in life, and ensure that we always hope for the best and eventually good things will happen.
Reflection: What worked well for this image was the lighting and the model’s positioning. What didn’t work was the positioning as it needed to be touched in Photoshop – luckily the problem was easily removed.
Title: Self-Portrait
Technique: Drawing
Process: This image was creating with a pencil and paper, whilst looking at the source image.
Reasoning: The concept was to capture the person at their best, which was when they are smiling. As a smile can lift the spirits of those around you.
Reflection: Everything about this image is bad simply because it was rushed and the creator doesn’t have the skills to draw real-life images. It could be improved by taking on another creative outcome such as line drawing or something along those lines.
Title: No Horsey Fun Time
Technique: Photography
Process: This image was created by taking a picture of a merry go round without people walking in front of it and ruining the shot.
Reasoning: The aim of this image was to capture the rejection some rides face at the Ekka. Something as simple and joyful as a merry go round was rejected by all who pass by, eliminating the fun of a simple childhood memory.
Reflection: This image was not well thought through, but the lighting for the image proved to be very good as it captures the ride in all its glory.
Title: First Time Meetings
Technique: Photography
Process: This photo was created by enticing the cow with food and then having the model pose with the animal.
Reasoning: For the boy in the image, this was his first time at the Ekka and he was very excited to see the farm animals.
Reflection: What went well in this image was the positioning of both the model and the animal. What didn’t go well was the bad lighting.
Title: Showbag Madness
Technique: Photography
Process: Image was made by taking an image in a crowded showroom.
Reasoning: The concept of this image was to capture the excitement of people wanting to buy and looking at show bags. Especially for kids, this is one of the most exciting parts about going to the Ekka.
Reflection: Image could have been taken at a different angle, and had more thought put into it. Lacks creative flare.
Title: Fireworks Display
Technique: Photography
Process: Fireworks were shot into the air and the aim was to get the best photo of them exploding.
Reasoning: Fireworks resemble the big finale. When the fireworks are shot into the air, the event is coming to an explosive end. This leaves the audience feeling satisfied and filled with happiness.
Reflection: Image should have been taken with an actual camera with a shutter speed. But even with an iPhone camera, the image came out quite well.
Title: All Alone
Technique: Photography & Photoshop Manipulation
Process: This photograph was taken in the aim to focus on the rides at the back, however when the image came through and was closely examined, a child in the front appeared to be lost (he wasn’t). but it certainly looked that way.
Reasoning: The concept behind this image was to show that in amongst all the fun, there is always the chance that a poor kid has been separated from their parents and is now lost. While everyone is having fun, this poor child is lost.
Reflection: What worked well was the positioning of the child in the image. From this, another concept could be created that proves to be a real problem of lost children.
Title: Basketball Memories
Technique: Hand drawing
Process: Image was drawn from memory
Reasoning: This memory was one of the fondest I had as a kid. As I played basketball when I was growing up, my brother and I would always go down to the outdoor court to practice. This allowed my brother and I to become a better player and form a brother/sister bond.
Reflection: What worked well was the style of the image. The line art allows for simplicity but still gets the point across. What didn’t work was trying to freehand draw the straight lines for the image. But once a ruler was used it fixed the image.
Title: Assassin’s Creed: The How to Guide
Technique: Photography and Illustrator manipulation.
Process: Image of the Xbox Controller was taken, and then the text and lines were created in Illustrator.
Reasoning: Assassin’s Creed was one of my favourite games as a kid. It allowed me to see the world from a different perspective and understand what it is like to live the life of a game character and feel their hardships on the screen.
Reflection: What worked well in this image was the positioning of the controller, however in this position you cannot see two of the back buttons.
Title: Childhood Treats
Technique: Collage
Process: This picture was made by enjoying tasty childhood treats and then sticking them together to make a collage.
Reasoning: By making this collage, it allows the viewer to remember the deliciousness of their favourite treats, and can prove to be a reminder of what their particular tastes are.
Reflection: What went well was the collage stage itself. Making the image was very easy to do once the chocolate was out of the wrappers and made the experience very enjoyable. Probably needed a few more treats to cover up the white space.
Title: Was Once my Home
Technique: Photography
Process: Image was taken out the front of my house before it was sold as this was the house I started university in.
Reasoning: This house held so many memories and was an amazing place to live. Through this image, I can recall all of the memories over the years and provides as a wonderful reminder.
Reflection: It would have been better if the image was taken at a higher angle, but since the house is on a hill, the best that would be taken was this angle.
Title: 4:56pm Friday Afternoon
Technique: Photography
Process: The image was created by taking a photo of the sky whilst looking at the afternoon sun.
Reasoning: On Friday afternoon, there was only one solid cloud in the sky attempting to conceal the sun. At this time of day, darkness is on rise while the sun is making its way to the other side of the world to provide light to those in darkness. And it’s rude of the cloud to try and dull its evening shine.
Reflection: What went well was the positioning of the elements in the sky and the added effect that the city in the background has. What didn’t work was the slight spot created on the image from the sun.
Title: Electric Man
Technique: Photography
Process: This image was created by photographing certain objects that represent another hidden object.
Reasoning: When finding images for this section, I was talking to one of my friends who is an electrician and when looking at the power point on the wall, I saw a little man without legs.
Reflection: There were no problems with this photo, however, it might have been smart to use Photoshop to add a smile to the little electric man.
Title: The Dog’s Shadow
Technique: Photography
Process: This image was created by photographing certain objects that represent another hidden object.
Reasoning: Dogs are Man’s best friend and when they are with you, they are almost like a shadow, following you around.
Reflection: The gap in the fingers somewhat detracts from the shadow, but the image is still comprehensive even with it there. Could be improved by having a better camera angle.
Title: The Hidden Face
Technique: Photography
Process: This image was created by photographing certain objects that represent another hidden object.
Reasoning: This whiteboard has been made to reveal the gaping mouths of most confused kids and teens when they turn up for school or university. The shock and horror they all have when they receive an assignment is apparent in this image.
Reflection: Was a very easy image to find and capture. But it would have been better to add more of a shock factor to the image with the use of Photoshop or illustrator.
Title: Dangerous Bunny
Technique: Photography & Illustrator manipulation
Process: This image was created by photographing certain objects that represent another hidden object.
Reasoning: When looking up at the sky, I was astounded when I saw what looked like a bunny running with a box cutter. So, the main concept behind this image is to not let bunnies run with sharp objects.
Reflection: What worked well was the placement of the clouds and the added effect the lines make in creating the image.
Title: Beetle Door Stop
Technique: Photography
Process: This image was created by photographing certain objects that represent another hidden object.
Reasoning: When looking at this object straight on, it resembles the face of a beetle as it has the eyes and the pincers.
Reflection: This image was very easy to capture, but there was a lot of difficulties finding it in the first place. Could have been improved by placing the image on the body of a big beetle to show the resemblance.
Title: Single Drop
Technique: Magnified photography
Process: This image was created by using close-range shots and camera angles.
Reasoning: This single drop of water is the key to life for this plant. Without water, this plant would not be what it is not. Water proves to be a sole life force for everything on earth.
Reflection: This image was taken to be a mock shot for other images the group had intended to take. But once it was taken, it proved to be a very good image. Wouldn’t do much to change this image. Is a proper example of photography skills.
Title: An Ounce of Light
Technique: Magnified Photography
Process: The image was created by zooming up to the sunlight that shone through the trees and focusing on the object in front to create the white light.
Reasoning: There will always be that little ounce of light that shines down on you from above. Even on your worst days, this ounce of light is there to lift your spirits and prove that everything will get better in time.
Reflection: This was another photo that I was very happy with simply because it looks more professional to those that have been created earlier in this list. Would change the positioning of the image and place the sunlight out of the centre of the image.
Title: Welcome to the Darkness!
Technique: Pin Light Photography
Process: This was made by adjusting the shutter speed on the camera, turning off the lights and switching on the phone light, and moving them in a pattern to create an image.
Reasoning: The concept of this image was to create something that would allow someone to feel welcomed into a dark space. Most people see the dark as being scary and a place you shouldn’t be. But with the help of light, the hi image was made and acts as a welcoming to those viewing it.
Reflection: This image was quite difficult to take simply because it was hard to make the proper gestures to form the required word. An adjustment of this image would be having more people and spelling the word ‘Welcome’ with their phones.
Title: A Song of Fire and Ice
Technique: Pin Light Photography
Process: This was made by adjusting the shutter speed on the camera, turning off the lights and switching on the phone light, and moving them in a pattern to create an image.
Reasoning: This image resembles the relationship between popular Game of Thrones Characters. The red resembles the fire of Daenerys Targaryen, while the blue resembles the Ice of Jon Snow. If anything, it is a tribute to the constant battle between fire and ice.

Reflection: This image was not made with a particular theme, more so just experimentation and fun with the camera. But it did create a nice image that can be used to highlight the concept. There wasn’t any difficulty with this image.

Title: Love Conquers All
Technique: Pin Light Photography
Process: This was made by adjusting the shutter speed on the camera, turning off the lights and switching on the phone light, and moving them in a pattern to create an image.
Reasoning: The concept of this image is that love conquers all. No matter what trouble you’re facing, the love of your family and friends can do wonders and get you through more than you could ever imagine.
Reflection: To make this image more symmetrical, one person should have had both lights and draw the image in front of them. The heart still looks great now, but to make it look even better it would have been smart to let one person make the heart shape.
Title: Be like a Tree and Leaf.
Technique: Texture/Pencil Rubbing
Process: To create this image, the object had to be placed underneath the paper and then with a pencil, shaded over to reveal the outline and texture of the object underneath.
Reasoning: This picture reveals the complexity of the world around us. The leaf in this image has its own specific pattern and texture, just like everything in this world. The complexity of our earth so vastly beautiful and mind-blowing.
Reflection: There was no difficulty making this image, however, it would have been better if a full leaf had been used, or at least one with a better and more intricate texture.
Title: Objects of Man
Technique: Texture/Pencil Rubbing
Process: To create this image, the object had to be placed underneath the paper and then with a pencil, shaded over to reveal the outline and texture of the object underneath.
Reasoning: The concept of money has changed the way everyone sees the world. Life is a constant battle to try and obtain more. People become so washed up in their greed that they forget about everything important around them.
Reflection: This image was very easy to create with a simple concept to back it up. There isn’t much I would do to change it, except maybe have a more intricate coin to reveal through the pencil rubbing.
Title: Red Velvet Bliss
Technique: Photography
Process: The cupcake had to be made and then sliced to allow this photo to be taken.
Reasoning: The concept behind this image stems from a love of baking. The fluffy texture of a cupcake is bliss when it comes out of the oven right.
Reflection: The cupcake was beautifully made and tasted delicious. It was difficult to get it to stand properly without falling and the image had to be taken quickly as it was at risk of melting the cream. To improve this image, the cupcake could have been placed into a different position.
Title: Country Living
Technique: Mathematical Patterns
Process: Icons were chosen from the Noun Project website and placed together on a 300 x 300pixel box to create a pattern. The pattern was then placed into another icon
Reasoning: A country theme was chosen as travelling to the country for rodeos and country music events has become my saving grace. It allows me to forget my troubles in the city and escape to a place where I feel happy and at peace, and more importantly, where I can have fun.
Reflection: This image was manipulated more than a few times to make it better than was it was. The final image is the best collaboration of icons as they sit nicely within the broad rim hat. To improve this image the colour scheme could be changed.
Title: Onions have layers
Technique: Photography.
Process: An onion had to be chopped in half and then photographed.
Reasoning: The concept that came to mind when finding a pattern in nature was that of Shrek. Onions have layers, and these layers collaborate to create a beautiful ringed pattern, quite like that of a tree.
Reflection: This image was very easy to create; however, the concept did not catch on until after the photo was captured. To improve this image, The photographer should have used better techniques instead of simply having it in the middle of the picture.
Title: Ships AHOY!
Technique: Photography & Image Manipulation
Process: Images were taken whilst travelling around the world and collaborated in photoshop with the use of layers to create one final image.
Reasoning: The aim was to have a collection of images from different parts of the world, come together and make a new world. In this image, there are mountains of Monserrat in Barcelona, the castle of Edinburgh in Scotland, pirate ships from Greece and man-made objects from Falkland, Scotland. The concept reveals the ships making their way down the canal to deliver their goods from far off places.
Reflection: The aspects that worked well are the castle and the mountains in the background. They fit into the image very nicely. However, the ships were very difficult to cut out and place in the image. To improve this picture, a stronger concept needed to be created.
