Under The Rocks
With this artwork I explored the interrelation of figurative representation with a narrative scenario.
We all have stories, which we decide to share or keep. Despite our willingness to share, we might feel concerned that with the act of sharing we are making ourselves more vulnerable. We are not usually aware of other people’s states of mind, which might drive us to develop less empathetic interactions with one another, and lose the opportunity to share our inner struggles and learn from each other.
I wrote a 15-line poem that I printed backwards on the bottom of cement figures resembling rocks. The figures were placed on top of reflective mylar, in order to reflect the words written on the bottom of the “rocks”. These figures were created using carved potatoes and radishes, creating molds from them using a thermoforming machine. Rockite cement was casted in the molds to form the rocks.
