Type I Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that ignores boundaries with respect to age and currently does not have a cure. Characterized by attacks on cells that produce insulin, T1D causes individuals to suffer abnormal blood sugar levels, which can lead to potentially life-threatening consequences. T1D can strike any child or adult at any time.

One or more warning signs often appear before the onset of the disease. These warning signs include persistent extreme thirst, increased appetite, drowsiness or lethargy, sudden weight loss, sudden changes in vision, heavy breathing, and frequent urination.

Individuals afflicted with T1D lead productive lives but under the constant concern of monitoring and maintaining proper blood sugar levels. Treatment options to assist and control blood sugar levels continue to improve, thanks to ongoing medical research funding from organizations like JDRF. Although T1D is a silent and pervasive disease that eludes a cure, continued medical research may lead to an eventual breakthrough.
