Global Telecommunications

Today AT&T is the largest provider of both local and long distance telephone services, wireless service, and DSL Internet access in the United States. In 1982, in advance of the divestiture of the regional holding companies, the Baby Bells, AT&T sought the expertise of Saul Bass/Herb Yager & Associates. Working closely with Saul Bass and Dean Smith, Jerry Kuyper designed the AT&T globe. The use of any reference to the iconic bell logo had been ruled out and we focused on communicating Global Telecommunications.

Over 2,000 logo designs were created before ten finalists were selected to be presented to the client. The globe emerged from a second round of creative exploration. The initial logo had 21 lines. Jerry methodically reduced the design to ten and twelve line versions. An eight line version for special use and reverse versions of each were created as well.

Over the last 30 years the globe symbol as evolved, perhaps not always for the best, but the core visual concept of global communications remains.
