VR UI Design: Joshua Bell VR

VR UI DESIGN
JOSHUA BELL VR
SONY INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT EUROPE

In my role as UI and Graphic Designer at Sony's Immersive Technology Group, I was tasked to create the UI for Joshua Bell VR - a 360 degree, stereoscopic 3D, VR experience for PlayStationVR in which famous violinist, Joshua Bell, plays Brahms Hungarian Dance No.1 alongside pianist, Sam Haywood.

I used Powerpoint to create a quick and simple flow for each stage of the experience.

For the loading icon I created a few different designs to capture a classic yet sleek feel, while including both instruments included in the experience itself - piano and violin.

Although a sans serif font can look better, a serif font was chosen due to the thicker lines which make it much easier to read at greater distances and smaller sizes. The final designs on the right are a thicker stroke to minimise the chance of scintillation within VR, with the exception of the buttons which were merely placeholder.

Interestingly, the abstract shapes created in the final menu design were able to be combined to create a cool little logo which would represent the experience in an ultra simple form.

I created art deco elements to construct the design for the main menu and these designs influenced the design of the main command buttons - cross, square and circle. Originally the goal was to present the button symbol alongside an icon, however, the discrepancy in size created imbalance when the designs were placed together.

The elements that made up the main screen, greeting the user to the experience.

A representation of the proximity between the elements that made up the main menu.
