one of the oldest book stores and news paper agents in shillong, k k barua & sons has been in business since 1925. this business was the first of its kind in shillong. from bringing in newspapers printed in england to exporting honey from the khasi hills, this was once a stop for all.
k k barua's grandson who runs the business today isn't a happy man." no one reads anymore." he laments. "young people are more interested in tv or computers. they don't want to waste their time reading." today this news stand has just a handful of papers on sale for the "older generation" whose numbers are fast dwindling.
i wonder how long this place would exist in todays shillong? does a place like this have a chance or would it be like others forgotten with the rapid change associated with a city in transition.
