We Borrowed It From Our Children | Illustration book design

Designer & Illustrator: Matthew Kam

Tutor: 2016 – 2017

This book aims at letting the readers know more about the impact they have on the environment, even with their seemingly insignificant daily life actions. With the 6 chapters in this book, readers will draw links between them and the endangered animals, climate change, various environmental issues, and also get suggestions of how they can help.

With the fact that this could be an unpleasant topic in mind, I made the decision to use a lot of illustration and hand written type to make it more approachable. Trying to avoid making the readers to simply switch off to the book.

The Book Cover
-
The name of the book is inspired by the ancient proverb. The main visual in the book cover, a black mass, is an abstraction of the mess of a state we are seeing the Earth in.
6 Chapters, 7 visual styles
-
For each chapter of the book, I used a distinct visual style to alternate the tone of the reading experience. Between each chapter there is a quote, acting as a remark of the chapter that just ended, or a preface to the next chapter.
Conclusion
-
As a student project I hope I can do something about the issues that I want to see change in, this is the first time I have done a book design of this scale and it was very rewarding. Despite the book cover design, this book is not actually published and have not been used for commercial purpose.
Thank you!
