Brain damage - Masters final project

PINK FLOYD
The overall goal of this self-initiative project is to expand the story behind Pink Floyd 's identity by producing individual artwork from a selection of their songs.

At their very beginnings Pink Floyd achieved international publicity making them the only band at the time producing psychedelic music which reflected as a shock to the audience. “Some people thought that we deliberately tried to sort of shock the audience because the music is not for dancing as usual and to keep them quiet while we perform” (Wrights, 2015). I was inspired by the deep meaning, audacity, and uniqueness that Pink Floyd songs hold.

Alongside, a deep scarp was left in the heart of this band. Syd Barret who was one of the founders and the star of the band, unfortunately turned on a wrong path, “The dark side of the moon” path of acids and went crazy shortly after the band began to accomplish their dream. In order to extend the story behind Pink Floyd and get the audience introduced in the history and the heart of the band, I decided to write a diary in the name of Syd Barret using my own imagination while trying to depict how he felt in some of the important moments on his “ride of the fame”.

Moreover, the book contains artwork which serves as a visualization for some of Floyd’s songs, as seen through the eyes of the author.

Syd Barret's diary is entirely fictional but the inspiration behind the written content is loosely based on real life stories and facts which gives the project innovative and original angle compared to what has already been done on the market.

Part one: diary
The book is presented as a timeline in order to create easier flow in the stories.

For instance, "The beginning" is presented as he is making the big move by getting out of his sheets, out of his comfort zone. Following this, the story "Back to my sheets" is where the band simply made the call not to pick Barrett up for the gigs. This is the period when the band neglected to tell Syd that his services were no longer needed in the band he created. On 6th of April, 1968 Floyd officially announced that Barrett had left the band which follows "Back to my sheets" as he is getting back from where it all started, from Cambridge, from his hometown, from his bed.

All the artwork, the artwork’s typography (with the exception of the headline for “Set the controls of the heart of the sun”, because who am I to play with the sun anyways?) and all the photography contained within the book are
entirely produced by the author.
