For making it about the music than the colour of the person creating it
The idea behind doing this shoot was to re-create the looks of iconic '80s female music artists who made an impact not just in the music scene, but also always chose to break all stereotypes sartorially. These women defied gender norms and existing cliches in otherwise male dominated genres like rock and punk, carving their own identity as artists as well as opinion leaders and not just mere sex symbols.
Recently, a video of Pink's acceptance speech at the VMAs went viral where she gives advice to her six year old who thought she was ugly because she didn't look a certain way. Our current generation is grappling with body image issues because the only role models they have to look up to are carefully packaged businesswomen before they are artists.
Barring a handful, most of the so called pop stars have the same bodies, have access to the best designer clothes and even their notions of feminism and empowerment are PR designed marketing campaigns.
So for this story, supermodel Nethra Raghuraman effortlessly morphs into five inspiring and extraordinary female artists from the eighties we love and admire.
