This cinematic landscape of light and sound incorporating video projection and audio design by Klip Collective was realized in its first execution during Data Garden’s annual Switched-On Garden on October 14, 2012. “I had a vision of what this would look like. In my mind I could see the lights moving through the air in the field, hear the sounds and how they would blend together,” said Ricardo Rivera, Klip’s Creative Director and the mastermind behind Meadow 1.0.

Viewers were quickly drawn to the lulling light and sound in the field. Over time, people moved closer and closer into the tall grass, fully immersing themselves in the smoke, light forms and sound. At first, the audio and visual elements imitated the natural world; the sound began to oscillate and pulsate as the firefly-like elements in the video lined up in moving geometric patterns across the meadow. In an intensely choreographed audio-visual activity, the sound and visuals again began to mimic the natural world.

Making the vision a reality proved to be quite a challenge. “The smoke delivery mechanism went through many iterations before we were satisfied with the results” said Josh James, Klip’s Director of Installation. “Our challenge was to create something people would enjoy even after having experienced an entire day of art and music,” said Thom Roland of Klip’s Art Department. Judging by the euphoric awe evident on the faces of those in the meadow that evening, the challenge was met.

The Switched-On Garden 002 was an interactive exhibition held at North America’s oldest botanic garden, Bartram’s Garden in Philadelphia, in the fall of 2012 during the citywide festival, Design Philadelphia. Music label Data Garden, who distribute their recordings in packaging that can grow into a living plant after being planted in the ground, invited artists including Klip Collective to create original works exploring the relationship between plants, music and technology for this unique event.
