Philips Cast Saw

Philips Cast Saw

Current orthopedic cast saws are uncomfortable for physicians and terrifying for young patients. Between the loud noise and the huge, exposed blade, getting a cast removed can become any child's worst nightmare. With Philips' growing interest in the medical space coupled with their long history of consumer products, the cast saw seems like a product they could get into.

The final design is simple and clean providing an approachable appearance appropriate not only for children, but adult patients as well. The concealed blade helps ease the anticipated fear of pediatric patients as well as providing haptic feedback to the physician for better depth control. Considering children are often more scared of the noise than the blade itself, an internal vacuum heavily reduces the noise of the cast removal process by eliminating the shop vac style dust collection. Through the use of spring loaded blade clamps and a pad printed blade, the intuitive, toolless, three step blade change process is quick and accommodates mid cut blade changes.
