ZIPPO REDESIGN
University project to redesign an existing product for a new target market.
I redesigned the classic Zippo lighter to suit women aged 30 to 50. This target market is a complex one. The  number of smokers within this group is decreasing  and those that do remain tend not to want to advertise their use. This design allows them to carry a lighter in their bags or have it out on a desk without it being immediately obvious that it’s a lighter.  It can easily go unnoticed as a mirror or makeup container.
I kept the most important elements (petrol tank, zippo style wick and wind guard and flip top style case).
By making the external case circular and adding a double curve to the exterior of the petrol tank slot I changed the style of the design from utilitarian to something more fashionable and minimal.

Finished design.
Starting point for the project.
By taking measurements from a conventional zippo lighter I was able to create a fully accurate 3D model. I then used this to produce an engineering drawing as a starting point to my design.
