My Sister's Story Book

A 50-page, full color book of photos and stories that archive and bring to life our 2015 public art project — MY SISTER'S STORY.

ABOUT THE PROJECT & THE BOOK:

Over a nine-month period in 2014-2015, 24 female artists and poets partnered with another woman in their community to learn about the defining experiences of her life. Each artist then became their partner’s medium, creating original work to share and honor her story. MY SISTER’S STORY — a public art & community dialogue project consisting of a series of interactive events held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin — was the culmination of those partnerships.

The goal of the project was to counteract the prevalence of competition among women and “mean-girlism” by demonstrating the power of reaching out, listening to and empathizing with other women. The project’s three events — an art exhibition, a spoken word performance and an intergenerational women’s dialogue session — were meant to spark conversation about how women relate to each other and demonstrate the power of mutual support and coalition-building among women in the ongoing fight for gender equality.

Each of the participating artists was captured with their community partner by local photographer, Missy Ziebart. These intimate portraits became an art installation at the venue where the events were held. This book features each one of the partner portraits along with either the visual artists’ work statement or the poets’ spoken word tribute.

Beyond achieving its intended goal, the project also drew attention to a wide range of subtopics from human trafficking and immigration to police brutality and mental illness within the Milwaukee community. Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin recognized the project publicly, thanking all involved for using creativity to promote gender equality.
