The Red Badge of Courage is a war novel written by Stephen Crane and originally published in 1895. The book takes place during the American Civil War. The Author Stephen Crane tells a story about Henry Fleming, a teenager who enlists with the Union Army in the hopes of fulfilling his dreams of glory. Shortly after enlisting, the reality of his decision sets in. He experiences all the horrors, boredom, and complete injustice of war.

The notion of war is only fully understood by those who have seen it firsthand. Leaving a lasting impression in the minds of those individuals, long after they step foot off the battlefield. This edition of The Red Badge of Courage is much like the original book, but it puts a contemporary spin on the story with the War in Iraq.  Having served a tour in Iraq myself while in the United States Army, this story resonated with my thoughts about the true realities of war, whether it be past or present. Included in this edition of the story are short paragraphs as well as photos of some of the soldiers that stood beside me while overseas. Being that war is not easy to discuss, I am deeply appreciative of each soldier that helped share their story to collectively create this edition of the book. Their input helps share a glimpse into the physical and mental toll that comes with stepping foot on the battlefield.
