Stainsby Festival iPad Drawings 2014

As an old "Disco Boy" I wasn't sure what I'd make of Folk Music (I was told the closest to Disco was a didgeridoo playing House Music - according to one-who-shall-remain-nameless, the moment when his extendable didgeridoo came out was so hilarious she had to leave!) but I hardly had time to listen - I was far too busy drawing. Besides, most of what I heard on the Saturday seemed more Rock orientated, or else just singing with a guitar, so that was alright. There wasn't a finger-in-the-ear in sight. Mind you, it seems I'd arrived too late for the drumming workshop.

Apparently there were some real legends there, though I didn't recognise anybody's name on the line up. But some of them were certainly popular.

I didn't always realise when people were watching. A very nice South African woman came to look and chat as I was finishing one sketch, saying she used to draw and would love to get back into it. One of the musicians in the band I contacted afterwards told me he'd peeked over my shoulder out of curiosity but I hadn't noticed. But others came to look, some to chat and talk about the festival or look through some of the drawings I'd done.

The main afternoon concert started on the main stage (another legend I didn't know, apparently once in a band from the 60's or early 70's I'd vaguely heard of - he sounded pretty good) and groups of people had parked themselves outside of the tent, sat in the shade keeping cool. All were looking into the tent, so I sat facing them on my stool as they relaxed on ground sheets and camping chairs.

Towards the end of his set and several encores I went into the tent, finding a seat between songs right at the front to one side and started looking at the structure of the stage and tent. Good for a more developed drawing, I thought, so began to map out the basic shapes and perspective. The concert finished and the tent was closed but I kept on drawing, and another band drifted one by one on to the stage for their sound check. So once I'd got the "architecture" and some colour done I placed the band members on top using the iPad apps layers - keeping the figures fairly loose and lively. They were there quite some time, testing and joking with the sound mixer, but then finished with a run through of one of their numbers. I've got to say, I was very impressed indeed - it was powerful stuff, very rock 'n' roll though with fiddle and a big amplified tin whistle, and brought very appreciative applause, cheers and whistles. "Come back at eight" one of them said through the PA to the watching crowd outside.

Facebook told me that the name of the band I liked is "Tomorrow's Ancestor". I've now got loads of muso's in my Facebook Friends Suggestions instead of my usual bunch of artists-who-know-artists. Suddenly it's a wider world out there!

We did have a pretty dramatic storm on the Saturday afternoon, but it was over in an hour. I had a terrific time, and I do love summer!
