From Thin Air: Porthole View - For the view outside - A fibers image was created with a filter from gray/white 'clouds', and is what I used to make the mountain wall on the left side, looking out the porthole. A yellow and orange abstract image is what I used to make the mountain range, with what's called a depth map. Darker colors recede and brighter ones come forward. A sphere has a texture added for the 'meteor'. That's the image I used to view behind the glass. You could use any appropriate image, but I had already done this and it worked perfectly. This image, because of how it's used, is providing the light, it's an illumination image, making it look as if light from the exterior is actually coming into the ship. A 2D image of Bare Metal, used for the ship's wall. It's been brought into the 3D space with the porthole and the texture increased to add dimension. Final porthole on the wall. There's a spot light and a point light, plus an image-based light, all on low strength, and what the hell, a lens flare, to complete it. I also made a high pass layer to bring out more details and make it sharper. Getting the glass dome to work right was a little tricky, but I finally got it. Lots of steps, but pretty cool outcome.
