 Cinema Paradiso
Three Films By Giuseppe Tornatore
At Cultural Centre of Russia(Pedder Road) Mumbai
28 October 2012

Giuseppe Tornatore is a true Sicilian filmmaker. Although Sicilian elements are common tropes is western cinema with innumerable mafia films, it is Tornatore's films that touch the soul of Sicily, transcending the ordinary, conventional and stereotypical. He came to International prominence with Cinema Paradiso, which resonated with audiences across the world, becoming an international phenomenon and picking up the Oscar for best foreign film in 1990. Prior to that he had won a Golden Globe in 1986 for best new director for Il Cammoristo and post his Oscar success he has consistently shown that he is not afraid to difficult historic and social issues that Sicilians rarely discuss such as Fascism and the Second World War. His latter films have also courted awards success with The Legend of 1900 (1998) winning a Golden Globe and Malena (2000) receiving two Oscar nominations. He is an elusive director who rarely gives interviews, instead letting the value of his work speak for itself.
