The passing of time…
Ageing | Growing | Decomposing | Sprouting | Changing

DAY ONE | IMAGE ONE:
#oneperday2017

Tile:  Growth 1

Technique: Gesture Drawing/ Sketching

Process:
A digital image of my subject was taken.  This image was used to help document my subject onto paper accurately.  This illustration was produced using paper and different gradients of pencils, to highlight light and shadow on the subjects face.

Reasoning:
Focusing on the subject of the passing of time, I have chosen to illustrate the literal growth of my brothers beard over the course of five days.  This concept I believe captures the passing of time through the changing of his facial features, as the beard over takes his facial structure.

Reflection:
By taking an initial picture of my subject it allowed me the ability to spend more time capturing the accurate detail of his face and the small differences between each day. When first uploading this images to Behance, I took a photo of the image and uploaded, but was advised to rather scan my drawings.  By scanning these images, rather than photographing them, the quality and detail is far better.

DAY SIX| IMAGE ONE:
 #oneperday2017

Tile:  Person I live with.

Technique: Digital photography.

Process:
Camera: Canon 7D
Lens: Canon 50mm f1.8
Aperture: 1.8
Shutter Speed: 1/24
ISO: 300

Using a plastic pipe to frame the subjects face, create a vignette and remove excess light from the lens.  A LED panel light was used to light the subjects face from their right, through an orange fabric to create a softer light creating difference.  The light was 50cm from the subjects face, the length of the pipe was 30cm.  The image was taken from 1.5m, handheld.

Reasoning:
The reason the image was taken like this, was through the experimentation of different light sources, colors and objects to create a different portrait, shot differently from your standard portrait style.  The pipe was used as the LED panel was over-exposing the subjects face at f1.8, an aperture used to create a shallow depth of field and wash out the background.

Reflection:
Challenges were trying to get the camera to focus on the subject, rather than the end of the pipe.  The light had to be side on, otherwise it quickly over-exposed the subject.  It was done like this to create an individual portrait with interesting lighting and shadows.
DAY SEVEN| IMAGE TWO:
 #oneperday2017

Tile:  A Stranger

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/80

Process:
A halogen lamp was placed a meter and a half from the subject, just below shoulder height.  The camera was mounted on a tripod.  A golden diffuser was used to create a warmth in the image. The angle of the light produced a shadow on the right hand side of the subjects face.  The image was imported into photoshop and the background was edited to be a blank canvas and a vignette was added to enhance the subjects face.  Additionally the brightness/contrast adjustment was used, as well as the saturation tool making the final image black and white better capturing the subjects character.  Through experimentation and drawing from the past illustration week, using the paintbrush tool in photoshop, I freely traced around the models facial features to add an element of individuality and experiment further showing that a portrait need not just be a photographic avenue.

Reasoning:
Through the task, a variety of different methods and portrait shots were taken in front of multiple lighting arrangements.  This particular photo stood out, as it captured the subject in the best lighting and with a more interesting depiction of his character.

Reflection:
I believe that the use of professional lighting allowed this image to better capture light and shade on the subjects face.  I believe their is room for improvement, mainly due to the camera settings.  More experimentation is needed to produce better results.
DAY EIGHT| IMAGE THREE:
 #oneperday2017

Tile:  Classmate.

Technique: Digital Photography

Process:
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/125

Subject was sat 50cm from the lens, lit from the side by 4 Bay Strip Lighting.

Reasoning:
Through the task, a variety of different methods and portrait shots were taken in front of multiple lighting arrangements.  This particular photo stood out, as it captured the subject in the best lighting and with a more interesting depiction of his character. Furthermore, additional experimentation was used in Photoshop using the Pen tool to create a variety of different colorful freeform shapes giving the face a more bold structure. Finally, the finished black and white image was edited further, by using a white blurred brush tool, to appear as light in the top right hand corner, shining onto the subjects face. Which I believe enhances the portrait.

Reflection:
I believe that the use of professional lighting allowed this image to better capture light and shade on the subjects face.  I like the reflection of the lighting in the subjects eyes.  I believe their is room for improvement, mainly due to the camera settings.  More experimentation is needed to produce better results.
DAY NINE| IMAGE FOUR:
#oneperday2017

Tile:  Self Portrait

Technique: Digital Photography

Process:
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/250

Subject was lit with natural afternoon light, hitting the white back wall and the subjects face side on.  Image was then imported into photoshop and experimented with, using different color hues and temperatures, brightness and contrast to create a warm portrait taking advantage of the warmth of the afternoon sun.

Reasoning:
The light outside provided a perfect opportunity to attempt an outside portrait.  A style that I have not yet experimented with.

Reflection:
Natural light produced a much warmer image.  I believe that nautral light best brings out the subjects character and promotes their natural features.  There is perhaps too much light however, and the background washing out due to over exposure can detract from the subject.

DAY TEN| IMAGE FIVE:
 #oneperday2017

Tile:  Self Portrait Illustration

Technique:
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/250

Process:
An original image was imported into photoshop and a black and white filter was used.  This and a change of contrast created a starc black and white exposure and created the illusion of a sketch.

Reasoning:
I wanted to experiment further with photoshop filters, using a digital image, as it is not something that I have a great deal of experience with.  I further experimented with duplicating and repeating the image as a pattern.

Reflection:
I wished to try this type of imagery with different colors, inspired by the works of Andy Warhol and his repetitive portrait of Marilyn Monroe.

Tile:  Stuffed Toys of the Ekka 1

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/125

Process:
The photos in the Ekka series, were taken in a 'street photography' sense.  Meaning, quick photos, lots of movement and fleeting opportunity.  No special lighting was used.  The nature of this photography captured the concept the best and allowed for the subject to be completely natural in their movement and environment.   This image was imported into Photoshop then, the brightness/contrast adjustment tool, as well as the paint tool at 20% translucency to black out the background, further emphasizing the stuffed toy.  See below images to show the process further.  The blur tool in Photoshop was used to blur out the text above the stuffed toy, as it detracted from the photo and took your gaze away from the subject.

Reasoning:
The core concept of this image series motivated by the intrigue and story of the stuffed toys, going home with their new owners.  This image series hoped to capture the toys emotion.  I wanted to capture the 'soul' of the toy, and show the connection between the viewer and the toy.  It should evoke emotion in the viewer, as you sympathize for a toy being mistreated and share joy with a toy being loved.

Reflection:
Challenges were the fact that it is difficult to capture a subject who is unaware of their photo being taken and due to the amount of movement.  All the images in this series aim to not focus on the individual for ethical reasons and also not to take away from the main subject.

DAY SIXTEEN| IMAGE ONE:

Tile: AFRICA

Technique:
Illustration Using:
-Paper
-Watercolour
-Black Pen

Process: This illustration was made by using 0.6mm pen, the image was then scanned and printed out.  It was scanned and printed as this ensured that the pen would not leak when the water colour was later applied.  This image was then uploaded into Photoshop to enhance the colours and contrast, and edit any blemishes around the outside of the image.

Reasoning: I was motivated to draw this image, as it captured a childhood memory of growing up in Africa, and the best was to illustrate the image was to do so in my favorite media, water colour.

Reflection: By scanning the image and printing it out, it guaranteed that the image would not interfere with the water colour making it a sharper, more effective image.  I did it this way as it was the best way to illustrate my memory of my childhood.

DAY SEVENTEEN| IMAGE TWO:

Tile: CHESS

Technique:
Illustration Using:
-Paper
-Black Pen

Process:  This illustration was made by using 0.6mm pen, the image was then scanned and printed out.  This image was then uploaded into Photoshop to enhance the image using brightness and contrast, and edit any blemishes around the outside of the image.

Reasoning: As the task was to draw a diagram of a game I played in year 3, I have grown up with multiple chess boards in my home and chess was always a big part of our lives.  I illustrated it as a plan view, as it best describes the lay out of the game.

Reflection:  I believe the basic illustration of the game, is the best way to communicate it, without overcomplicating the description.  I attempted to use black water colour to highlight the contrasting dark squares on the board but that image did not turn out as well as the final chosen image, as the paint leaked into surrounding squares.  Other methods could have been experimented with, such as using different media, or Photoshop and illustrator.
I was instructed to illustrateDAY EIGHTEEN| IMAGE THREE:

Tile:  P.S I LOVE YOU

To add to the finished product, the initial black and white version is presented alongside the coloured version.

Reasoning: I was instructed to illustrate my favorite treat.  The PS I Love You bar, was also something from my childhood, and the fond memories I have of it, led me to its choosing.

Reflection: I bought a PS I Love You bar and was able to accurately establish a colour scheme with my water colours.  Painting the water colour onto the black and white photocopy, without the watercolour taking away from the block lettering was difficult.  The block lettering needed to be fixed in post.
DAY NINTEEN| IMAGE FOUR:

Tile:  HOME

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: DJI Mavic Pro
Lens: 28mm Prime.
Aperture: f2.2
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/250

Process: To capture this image a DJI Mavic Pro Drone was used.  Hovering 30 meters above my home, I was able to capture an interesting perspective not normally seen.  The image was then imported into Photoshop and was adjusted using the brightness/contrast adjustment tool, as well as hue and saturation tools to enhance the greenery in the image and sharpen the detail in the roof and surrounding features.

Reasoning: Images were taken of the front of the house but because of the lack of a wide angle lens, I was not able to fully capture a good view.  Furthermore I wanted to experiment with a different photographic medium to that which I had been using.  The drone offered an interesting perspective and a new photographic learning experience. I wanted to illustrate this particular days topic in a less traditional way.

Reflection: The 4K camera on the Mavic Pro was able to take a sharp image in the dying afternoon light.  The angled sun allowed for some interesting 'light play' on the roof of the house, however unfortunately starting too late I missed out on the majority of the afternoon sun.  Despite this I was able to capture an interesting image in a new format for me.
DAY NINTEEN| IMAGE FIVE:

Tile: SKY

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Iphone 6S
Lens: 22mm
Aperture: f2.2
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/20

Time: Friday 5:45pm

Process: For this image, not alot of process went into it.  I was instructed to take an image on a Friday night of the sky.  I fortunately happened to be in the right place at the right time to capture this image, however only with my iPhone as it was the only camera I had with me. The image was then imported into photoshop were the hue tool was used to emphasize the pinks and purples.

Reasoning: The dying light of the afternoon sun made for a beautiful sunset.  As the task asked for a photo of the sky on a particular night I planned to take a photo later as the sun had set, but I could not pass up the opportunity to capture this sunset.

Reflection: Unfortunately I did not have my DSLR with me so I had to resort to using my iPhone camera.  While still taking an acceptable photo, a higher resolution photo from my DSLR would have been easier to edit in post.

See that thing?
This week you will find objects that look like something other than what they are.
DAY TWENTY| IMAGE ONE:
 #oneperday2017

Tile: HAPPY BAG

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f8
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/125

Process: This weeks topic was to capture objects that looked like other things, or Pareidolia.  This particular image involved some setting up, rather than an organic discovery of an object that looked like something else.  Initially the bag was seen, but the 'tongue' was added and it was moved into a location with better lighting to make it much more obvious. Afternoon light pouring in through a window was used to highlight the bag to show the grain of the leather and metal features.  The bright lighting also portrayed the bag as a 'happy' subject, rather than a dark and gloomy light portraying a negative connotation.

Reasoning: My imagination was trigger when I was sorting through my mothers closet to find something to wear.  I came across this bag and its familiar facial features.  As it was hidden away in the closet I decided to take it out of the room and add a 'tongue' to make the pareidolia more obvious.

Reflection:  The bright light of the room produced a 'happy' vibe giving the subject a personification.  The primary challenge was locating an object that resembled something else.  Even this bag was a stretch of the imagination to begin with, thus the red sock was added to greater highlight the change.
DAY TWENTY ONE| IMAGE TWO:
#oneperday2017

Tile: OWL

Technique:

Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/80

Process: This particular image was taken in the car. This image had no special set up or lighting as it was taken in the spur of the moment. The image was imported into Photoshop to help clarify the image and enhance the main focus of the image.

Reasoning: I was stuck at a traffic light on the way to the city to search for objects for this weeks topic. Looking up out of my normal field of view I noticed a security camera that looked like an owl.

Reflection: The idea in this image worked well, however I was limited by the time I had (as I was stopped at a red light) and I was limited in the lens I had on the camera, as I couldn't zoom any closer.
DAY TWENTY TWO| IMAGE THREE:
 #oneperday2017

Tile: BIRD

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/125

Process:  This particular image was taken while walking through QUT Gardens Point campus, on my way to the car park. This image had no special set up or lighting as it was taken in the spur of the moment. The image was imported into Photoshop to help clarify the image and enhance the main focus of the image.

Reasoning: This task really had me looking outside of my normal field of vision.  Looking up on a walk that I have taken hundreds of times revealed a face that I had not seen before.

Reflection: This image is one of my favorite images in the series for this week, as you can clearly see the shape of the bird without having to add any elements.

DAY TWENTY THREE|IMAGE FOUR:
 #oneperday2017

Tile: MEET LEAF, THE CAT.

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Iphone 6S
Lens: 22mm
Aperture: f2.2
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/20

Process: This particular image was taken while walking through QUT Gardens Point campus, on my way to class. This image had no special set up or lighting as it was taken in the spur of the moment. The image was imported into Photoshop to help clarify the image and enhance the main focus of the image. Saturation tool was used to make the image black and white, as I felt it was more effective as an image.

Reasoning: This task really had me looking outside of my normal field of vision.  Looking up on a walk that I have taken hundreds of times revealed a shape that I had not seen before and would not necessarily have seen before this task.  The leaf in the drain triggered my imagination. The leaf in the drain was the shape of a cat when viewing it from a low camera angle.

Reflection: I believe this image worked well as it was taken from a low camera angle representing the cat in a more realistic way. The natural light on the leaf highlights the patterns in the cats fur. The idea in this image worked well, however I was limited by the camera, as I only had my IPhone 6S with me.

DAY TWENTY FOUR:
#oneperday2017

Tile: ROBOT FACE

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f5.6
ISO: AUTO

Process: This particular image was taken while walking through QUT Gardens Point campus, on my way to the car park. This image had no special set up or lighting as it was taken in the spur of the moment. The image was imported into Photoshop to help clarify the image and enhance the main focus of the image.

Reasoning: This task really had me looking outside of my normal field of vision.  Looking up on a walk that I have taken hundreds of times revealed a face that I had not seen before.

Reflection:  I believe that this is my weakest image as I aimed not aimed not to just capture faces this week, as I believed it to be too easy.  However, this weeks task for harder than I thought it would be, and I will forever be looking for objects that look like something else.

Tile: BUG'S LIFE

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 100mm
Aperture: f2.8
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/250

Process: This image was taken using special macro photography equipment. The image was imported into Photoshop to enhance the coloration of the bug and darken the background to help draw the audiences focus toward the insect.

Reasoning: This weeks focus is on macro scale so I was immediately drawn to images of small insects as they showed individuality.  Additionally, a class mate had a wealth of knowledge on insect macro photography, so to be able to use this resource was very helpful.

Reflection: This image was extremely difficult to capture. Multiple photos were taken before this image was taken. The lens used made it hard to find the subject as it has a very small focus area. I would have loved to experiment with this lens more if I had access to it, as macro photography interests me greatly.

Tile: SUNSET

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f11
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/80

Process: This image was influenced by this weeks topic of scale, focusing on light and shadow.  To take these images, small scale African animals were purchased and placed on a rock near a body of water.  The afternoon sun provided an interesting backdrop as it created patterning across the surface of the water.  The animals were captured in dark with an aperture of f11 to firstly show the illusion of a typical African sun set and to also hide the fact that they were plastic figurines. The original images were imported into Photoshop to eliminate the plasticity of the animals, by darkening the photo nd enhancing the silhouette of the animals, rather than their construction.

Reasoning: I have seen other work done similar to this, as shown in the lecture series, using figurines and small toy soldiers.  I wished to experiment with this same technique, but using different figurines and concepts.

Reflection:  I believe that this image series was successful due to the time of day the images were taken.  If these images were taken at an earlier time, the images wouldn't appear as realistic, as you would see the detail of the fake figurines easier.

Tile: THE STREETS

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 5 Seconds

Process: To take this series of photographs a long exposure was utilised to produce movement in lights.  Having the camera mounted to a fixed surface allows the background of the image to stay relatively still, while lights moved through the space, effectively painting light.  These images were then imported into Photoshop were the brightness/contrast adjustment tool and hue and saturation were used to 'clean up' the noise in the image from the higher ISO.

Reasoning:  I have always wanted to experiment with long exposure shots, and this particular street view was local to me and allowed me to capture cars in both directions, offering a difference in light colour.

Reflection: On reflection, it would have been better if I had used a tripod to better stabilise my photograph and give me the ability to better aim the camera.  Secondly, the time of night was quite late, and unfortunately I had to wait for passing cars to add interest to the photo.  If this had been taken earlier in the traffic period it could have produced some interesting results.
DAY TWENTY NINE:

Tile: TRAFFIC LIGHTS

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 5 Seconds

Process: To take this series of photographs a long exposure was utilised to produce movement in lights.  In this instance the lights remained stationary while the camera moved to effectively paint light in different shapes.  These images were then imported into Photoshop were the brightness/contrast adjustment tool and hue and saturation were used to 'clean up' the noise in the image from the higher ISO

Reasoning: I have always wanted to experiment with long exposure shots, and this particular street view was local to me and allowed me to capture different colored traffic lights and signas, offering a difference in light colour in the finished product.

Reflection: I would like to further experiment with this style of photography, with different styles, shapes and colours of light.  Also, the direction of the cameras movement affects the finished product.

Tile: NATURE

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/250

Process: Looking for natural textures this week I stumbled upon a fungus growth on our lemon tree in the backyard.  Its size, colour and texture interested me.  In order to take this photo as close as I did I had to stand further back and use my lens at the extent of its zoom.  Unfortunately its minimum focus distance was too far away at 18mm to capture it accurately, but at f4.5 and 55mm the image came out alright.  Multiple images were taken of my backyards natural texture, but this image was a little bit different. The image was then imported into photoshop where the brightness/contrast adjustment tool was used, in combination with the hue and color feature to enhance the image further.

Reasoning: This weeks task was to capture textures in nature. This fungus growth showed a different texture and a combination of shapes and features that took my interest.

Reflection: Unfortunately, not having a macro lens hindered me slightly and I would have been interested to see the results of a similar image taken with a 100mm f2.8 lens.  However, learning to use the zoom on my lens, coupled with the aperture of f4.5, I was able to get some cool results.

Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/80

Process: Looking for natural textures this week I stumbled upon this woven fibre material on a deck chair. Multiple images were taken of man made objects around my home, but this image was a little bit different. The image was then imported into photoshop where the brightness/contrast adjustment tool was used, in combination with the hue and color feature to enhance the image further.

Reasoning: This weeks task was to capture textures in nature. This woven fabric showed a different texture and a combination of shapes and symmetry that took my interest

Reflection: Unfortunately, not having a macro lens hindered me slightly and I would have been interested to see the results of a similar image taken with a 100mm f2.8 lens.  However, learning to use the zoom on my lens, coupled with the aperture of f4.5, I was able to get some cool results.

Paper
Paint
Water Colours
Tissue Paper
Glue

Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/80

Process: To capture this image, I needed to combine illustration techniques as well as digital photography.  The topic for todays task was to make your own texture, I made mine by using a variety of paint colours, water colour and imprinted them into scrunched up tissue paper creating an interesting texture.  Multiple experiments were undertaken using different colours and paint consistencies, creating different depths and contrasts. Photographs were then taken outside to maximize best lighting, using the dying afternoon sun.  In order to take these images I manipulated the paper into different forms and experimented further with the length of photo, taking the images in different focal lengths trying to produce the feeling of landscape photography on a small scale.  These photos were then imported into Photoshop where the brightness/contrast adjustment tool was used, in combination with the hue and color feature to enhance the image further.

Reasoning: I saw similar images during my research for this weeks topic and it piqued my interest.  The example I saw used fabric, however I believed that the tissue paper would absorb the colours better and produce an interesting result as the colour seeped further into the fibers.

Reflection:  I really enjoyed this activity as it allowed me to explore all of the concepts we have spoken about throughout this semester, from illustration to experimentation to digital photography and experimentation with digital manipulation.

DAY THIRTY:
#oneperday2017

Tile: PATTERN

Technique:
Illustrator

Process:  To create the following sequence of images, I used Adobe Illustrator and the pattern making tool, to create the following designs.  The paintbrush tool was used to create the primary image before the patterning could take place.

Reasoning: Using the different shape tools interested me ad overlaying the shapes to create images was a fun experimentation process.  I began with the simple watermelon design and continued with varying complexity further with new shapes and bold patterns.

Reflection: I believe that the following images worked quite well and I can see how the pattern tool could be an incredibly useful application for my design work in the future.

Tile: Palm

Technique:
Digital Photography
Camera: Canon 70d
Lens: 18-55mm
Aperture: f5
ISO: AUTO
Shutter: 1/80

Process: Looking for natural textures this week I stumbled upon this horizontal palm frond. Its size, colour and texture interested me.  Multiple images were taken of natural patterns around my home, but this image was a little bit different. The image was then imported into photoshop where the brightness/contrast adjustment tool was used, in combination with the hue and color feature to enhance the image further.  Furthermore I experimented with different hue sets in Photoshop to produce some new colours.  Seeing something so easily recognizable in a different context interested me.

Reasoning: This weeks task was to capture patterns in nature. This palm frond showed a different texture and a combination of shapes and symmetry that took my interest

Reflection: The colourful experimentation was interesting as it produced some cool results. Seeing something so easily recognisable in a different colour often challenges the mind to see things a little outside the box.  I really enjoyed this weeks task, and will continue looking for patterns everywhere I go.

Multiple Images

Process: To create this image series, I did a series of sketches to figure out what features I would like to capture in my "world".  I then set off to take photographs of the different elements, such as the tree, the water, sand and subject.  The images were then imported into photoshop, and I began to create my world.  The GIF below demonstrates the process that took place, in order to create the final image.  Further experimentation was done by simply overlaying previous photos from the previous weeks.

Reasoning: I was influenced to make this image series, when I saw the smaller scale plant, which could be represented as a full scale tree.  To demonstrate its now massive scale, a subject was added to show its new size.  In my dream world I would be a beach, under the shade of trees, not far from water.

Reflection: As this was my first attempt to overlay images in Photoshop, I believe there is definitely room for improvement, by working on this image I realized that the images you take before hand make a massive difference on the overall outcome of the final piece.  I can see how these techniques can be incredibly useful once you have gained a mastery of them, and will seek to better myself with practice.
