WEEK 2
Phone Evolution - A Change In Communication
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator Pencil, Shading Techniques (Smooth Shading, Directional Hatch and Finger Smudge), Eraser (Transitional Lighting)
Reasoning:
Phone Evolution was inspired by viewing the surrounding use of the mobile phone and how the technological concept of communication has changed. I wanted to picture the progressing of time through form based sketching, whilst also metaphorically articulating the difference between sketch and vector visual documentation.
Process:
- To assist with sketching, a stock image was found and used as inspiration to develop the drawing
- A B pencil was used to sketch the general outline and shade darker areas
- A 2H pencil assist with lighter shading to create a 3D effect to the overall image
- An Eraser was used to show reflective surfaces and produce transitional lighting
- Adobe Illustrator was used to develop a simplistic vector graphic of a modern smart phone using the pen and shape tool
Reflection:
The physical form and realistic attributes of the phone were represented effectively, with a clear progression of lighting/shading. An initial challenge was sketching all elements in proportion with one another to keep a form of consistency. The shade based method was time consuming however produced a cleaner and detailed depiction of an older phone. Having control over the darkness of the shade, using a finger smudge technique, provided a development advantage.

Fallen Rose
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Pencil, Shading Techniques (Smooth Shading, Directional Hatch and Finger Smudge), Eraser (Transitional Lighting)
Reasoning:
'Fallen Rose' is an illustration depicting the gloom and struggle within the final moments of a Rose's life. I was inspired to develop this image based on a connotative relation to the brief 'decomposing'. A rose represents love, holding symbolic significance, and was used as the subject to bring an essence of 'beauty' to the more negative theme of 'decomposing'.
Reflection:
Being an experimentation with flora texture and development, I was pleased with the final result. The cylindrical shape of the vase was difficult to sketch effectively, with a trial and error process to effectively portray the reflective effect. Rose petals were a challenge to map and acquire effective consistency however, with light directional hatching the result had a realistic finish.
#oneperday2017
Melting Away
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Pencil, Shading Techniques (Smooth Shading, Directional Hatch and Finger Smudge), Eraser (Transitional Lighting)
Reasoning:
The 'Melting Away' illustration attempts to explore see-through shading techniques by depicting a melting ice cube. I wanted to further extend my sketching abilities and experiment with see-through shading. The piece motivated a sense of exploration into soft sketching and manipulating light shades to create a clear exterior.
- The colour lookup 'HorroBlue' was added to reflect an colder tone
Reflection:
Overall, the image was considered a work in progress and was used as a training exercise. I was pleased with the irregular shape depiction and 3D layout however the overall challenge was the opaque effect and creating a melting puddle. The consistency of shading was not effective in the image using a directional hatch method and a different technique would be used for additional sketching.
#oneperday2017
Frangipani
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Pencil, Shading Techniques (Smooth Shading, Directional Hatch and Finger Smudge), Eraser (Transitional Lighting)
Reasoning:
Flowers blossom to welcome spring, and this idea was captured the 'Frangipani' piece. The frangipani is a beautiful flower and provides a sense of tropical atmosphere to its surroundings. It's white and yellow colour scheme is iconic, and the transition of shading highlights this beautiful feature. The image was sketched by using line and shape inspiration of a physical flower.
Process:
- Elements such as the bend in petals and lighting elements were articulated with a finger smudge effect.
- A finger smudge allows a seamless transition between light and dark shading; developing a smooth texture to the image.
- Directional hatching emphasises physical singularities of the flower, such as the bending of petals and the shadow left by an overlapping element.
- Once the sketch was completed, a 'Colour Lookup' filter was applied using Adobe Photoshop.
- The lookup is called LateSunset.3DL and adds a tropical essence to the overall sketch.
Reasoning:
The articulation of the flowers gradient colour scheme was effectively highlighted in the finalised image. Line and shape of the petals, with the use of the eraser, developed a detailed representation of the overlapping pattern. A key challenge faced was the sketching of the middle area as the view of petals curling is obstructed by other elements; trial and error was used.
#oneperday2017
Title: The Lonely Mushroom
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Pencil, Shading Techniques (Smooth Shading, Directional Hatch and Finger Smudge), Eraser (Transitional Lighting)
Reasoning:
'The Lonely Mushroom' was inspired by a tutorial activity and further extended upon to add further detail. Aesthetic shaping of the mushroom provided motivation to add textual elements and further depict the fungi as a documentation piece.
Process:
- A B pencil was used to sketch the general outline and shade darker areas
- A 2H pencil assist with lighter shading to create a 3D effect to the overall image
- An Eraser was used to show reflective surfaces and produce transitional lighting
Reflection:
Adding a level of simplicity to the drawing highlighted the attributes of  the 'growing' brief with the mushrooms overall sketch. The texture of fungi elements and the surrounding environment using simple pencil strokes adds realistic form. The method used relied on empty space to detail the mushroom. Colour could be used to extend the detail and separate all elements of the image.

WEEK 3
ADVENTURE! Is Out There... -  Someone Who Lives With Me
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
'Adventure! Is Out There...' is a take on the idea of adventure and humans natural instinct to explore. I'm attempting to promote a need to get out and discover the natural beauty of the world in a propaganda themed image. The image is a take on the rustic art style of nature posters often used to advertise camping grounds. This is made evident with a posterized incorporation of a warmer colour scheme to contrast the cold atmospheric colours of the photograph.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/2
Exposure - 1/3200
ISO - 40
--
- The photo was taken using broad lighting from a natural position. Shape tools were used to develop the outer frame of the photo, using blending options such as 'Bevel/Emboss' to give a form of realism to the piece.
- The fonts 'Bangers' and 'Sweet Sorrow' were used to display the adventure title in conjunction with the font 'Shumi' to display the underlying title. The strings of text were also manipulated with blending options such as Bevel/Emboss, Contour, Drop Shadow and Inner Glow.
- For the physical photograph, the contrast and exposure of colours was heightened with the 'Camera Raw Filter'.
- The opacity of 'Shadow/Highlights' was reduced along with the noise to reduce the detail and create the poster effect. Finally, a 'Paint Daubs' filter was applied to round solid shapes and produce the final result. A 'High Pass' filter was placed to product a distinct outline to the model.
- The colour lookup 'EdgeyAmber' was selected and the opacity was reduced to give a sense of ageing to the image.
Reflection:
The overall rustic poster style is reasonably well achieved. To fully achieve my desired effect, elements would have to be individually saturated, which is a skill I have not yet developed. The composition development suited my intended direction, with an iconic challenge being the balance of 'clarity' and 'vibrancy' to create the posterized style.
#oneperday2017
ALONE - Stranger
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
'ALONE' is a photography piece which displays the isolation of smokers in a mood based advertisement. Using short lighting techniques, the model is encapsulated in a more natural shadow. Short lighting is perfect for darker toned images as it places iconic features of the model in a shadow.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/2
Exposure - 1/1000
ISO - 40
--
- The image was first colour graded using Adobe Lightroom, where exposure, vibrance   and colour levels were adjusted to suite a black oriented tone.
- Shadow levels were also adjusted using the Tone Curve to darken lighter elements such as the sky.
- The image was then imported into Adobe Photoshop, where the text string 'ALONE' with PRIMETIME font was aligned against a pre-existing shadow to create an underline effect. - A 'Vivid Light' blending mode was applied and the opacity and light levels were changed using the brush tool.
- Smoke was applied to the models cigarette prop using a brush set and the blending mode was changed to fit with the darker toned backdrop.
Reflection:
Developing a morbid piece by darkening lighting and exposure elements turned out effective. The main challenge presented, was blending the 'ALONE' text element to create a shadow like effect. Positioning the text element against other shadow elements was also a challenge due to the photograph angle. The overall photography and composition method was simplistic; allowing freedom for 'Lightroom' editing.
#oneperday2017
Reflection! - Class Mate
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
'Reflection' explores the idea of the young generation finding their place in an evolving modern society. The composition style was developed around the format of an Album Cover to emphasise its youth representation. The split light used pattern is often used in an musician/artist setting, which was my overall intention for the composition.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/2
Exposure - 1/50
ISO - 100
--
- The photo was shot in a studio environment with controlled lighting. A split lighting pattern was used to evenly separate the ratio of light to shadow which is displayed on the model.
- Adobe Photoshop was used to assemble different components, using the green backdrop to assist with graphical elements.
- The pen tool was used to create a precise mask around the model for both a floor layer and a background layer. The colour of the floor was changed from a light green to a bright orange using the 'Hue/Saturation' tool.
- Using the brush tool, an external cloud preset was chosen and aligned against the floor using the transform tool. The blending mode was to to 'overlay' to accept changes in light and shadow.
- Reflection of the models face was completed by selecting the element from the photo and flipping its perspective horizontal and vertical using the Transform tool. The opacity was lowered and an overlay blending mode was also applied.
- The backdrop was created in a separate document using paint brush presets. This artwork was imported into the composition and a 'Color' blending mode was applied. The text string uses the font 'Gloss and Bloom', and a drop shadow was applied to show separation from the backdrop element.
- Due to the intensity of green light reflection, shadow elements were selected using the 'Quick Selection' tool and were altered using 'Hue/Saturation' settings.
Reflection:
The combination of composition elements presented a modern and true representation of the Photoshop tool set. A challenge faced was a green tint on shadows, made present by original photography. The shadows contrasted against the orange colour scheme and were time consuming to individually tint. The method using a low angle shot and split lighting pattern presented less post-production.
#oneperday2017
Split - Self-Portrait
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
'Split' is a depiction of identity, and the fact that everyone has a secret talent or hobby which is not always seen. I was encapsulated by the beautiful scenery of Queenstown, New Zealand and wanted to compare this to the Brisbane, Australia setting.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/2
Exposure - 1/1250
ISO - 40
--
- The composition is a combination of two photographs which were taken at a similar angle with a split lighting pattern. This pattern distributes the shadow and light reflection across the model at a centre point.
- Adobe Photoshop was used to edit both photographs into one image. A ripped tear graphic was inserted as the midpoint. Blending effects such as a slight Bevel/Emboss and Drop Shadow were used to add a form of realism to the image.
- A layer mask was generated on both photos based on the position of the tear graphic.
- The lighting 'curves' of the right image were slightly heightened in terms of highlights and saturation to blend with left image. A Fuji F125 Kodak 2935 'Colour Lookup' was applied to brighten the image slightly and increase the vibrancy of the image.
- The finalised image was imported in Adobe Lightroom to improve the visual integrity of shadows.
Reflection:
The reflective proportion effect worked to its desired intention. Optimisation of lighting between two separate locations was a challenge however was taken into consideration with photography of the right image. This method of photography and lighting allowed for set consistency to be performed in two locations and achieve the final result.
#oneperday2017
The Darkness - Illustrated Self Portrait
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Pencil, Shading Techniques (Smooth Shading, Directional Hatch and Finger Smudge), Eraser (Transitional Lighting)
Reasoning:
'The Darkness', is a take on the evil presence in life and how positive actions will always shine through. The composition is experimental and uses realistic self-portrait styles to articulate facial elements. I was motivated to explore portrait drawing, using online tutorials to assist with drawing eye and mouth features.
Process:
- A physical self-portrait was used as inspiration to assist with skull structure and sizing of features.
- Individual light strokes with a 2H pencil were used to develop hair features with attention to root attachment
- Initial feature placement took place to ensure proportion and sizing was correct
- Directional hatching and light finger smudging assisted with shadows which are present on areas such as the nose and dimples
- Adobe Photoshop was used to apply the black brush composition element
Reflection:
Being my first attempt at human portrait drawing, the end result presented a successful experimentation of different realistic techniques. Sketching areas with hair was an iconic challenge, as the length, shape and style had to be consistent to create the desired outcome. This method highlighted iconic features and allowed for exploration into shape and light transition on a human face.
#oneperday2017
WEEK 4
Strawberry Sundae
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, DSLR Camera, Light Box, Studio Lights
Reasoning:
'Strawberry Sundae' focuses on the delicious and iconic treat of the EKKA celebration. The ice cream has supplied joy and provided iconic memories for many Australians with it's sweet fruity taste. This image aimed to capture a 50's/60's essence of imagery and promotion of product; to present the essence of the treat through history.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/8
Exposure - 1/250
ISO - 3200
--
- The original photo was taken using a makeshift light box, with studio lights positioned to develop a broad lighting effect; reflective light from the top of the subject
- Using Adobe Lightroom, exposure, whites and contrast were heightened to increase the overall flare and brightness of the image.
- The image was then imported into Photoshop where a mask around the plate and ice cream was created using the pen tool. A  light blue background overlay was applied to add contrast and vibrancy; achieving the 50's/60's essence.
- Subject elements were sharpened slightly and the text 'Strawberry Sundae' was applied with the font 'Sweet Sorrow.
- Blending Options such as bevel/emboss and drop shadow were added along with lighter toned text colouring to match the subjects strawberry and ice cream layers.
Reflection:
The overall composition was created with precise placement of studio lighting, camera and subject to produce a successful result. The brightness and flamboyancy of the subject creates a feeling of hunger within the viewer; achieving its advertisement yet journalistic purpose. A challenge was subject related with the ice cream melting. The photography process had to be sped up to capture the desired shots. This method played upon product placement techniques, which an area which I show great interest in to learn further.
#oneperday2017
Welcome To Ekka
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
'Welcome to Ekka' portrays an interpretive message about the financial requirements to attend the event and its longevity as a future event. I was motivated based on a price comparison of the EKKA from a family member in comparison to her childhood. Being a show, I focused on the carnival aspect and blending this idea with a rust overlay finish to foreshadow age.
Process:
- Research took place into old carnival advertisements and used as inspiration to develop font, shape and colour.
- All elements from the background to the ticket graphics were drawn in Adobe Illustrator using the 'Pen' tool, and then copied into Photoshop to develop the composition
- The fonts 'Carnivalee Freakshow' and 'PRIMETIME' were used for textual elements
- The rust effect was develop using an overlay and adjusted using 'Opacity' and the 'Curves' tool
Reflection:
Reflection:
The aged sign and carnival aspect of the composition is shown effectively. Challenges with this image arose from attempting to enhance the ticket graphic to make it a centre piece of the composition. The method for this image followed previous knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and was a simpler approach to achieve the design intention.
#oneperday2017

That'll Do Pig
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
'That'll Do Pig' references the agricultural scene of the EKKA with a modern farmers market appeal. The physical competition of animals leaves a sense of anonymity to the feelings of, in this case, the pig. I was motivated by visiting the event as a child to find such animals kept behind cages for entertainment purposes. I wanted to highlight the story of pigs, and how the EKKA only views them as competitors; silhouetted in the back.
Process:
- Adobe Illustrator was used to develop a vector layout of the pig graphic and 'farmers award' badge
- The vector graphics were imported into Adobe Photoshop and rasterized for editing
- For the background texture, a photo was taken of a wooden bench top to achieve the modern farmers market appeal
- The pig graphic was given an artificial identity, with a paint splash brush set used to randomly erase certain areas
- The font for the word 'Pig' was 'Sweet Sorrow' with a drop shadow blending mode applied to add depth to the text
The font for the word 'Farmers Award' was PRIMETIME
Reflection:
This image blended vector graphics with texture photography to capture a warm DIY tone. I managed to acquire my own texture image instead of using external sources to supply the composition element. A formatting challenge presented itself with the 'Farmers Award' text being to separated. To solve this, a vector based page break was illustrated to fit with the farming theme. This method was done to assist with workflow and focus my strengths on vector development.
#oneperday2017
Freddo Showbag!
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
The enjoyment of show bags was captured with the piece 'Freddo Showbag!'. My love of the Freddo Frog show bag as a child, inspired me to create a promotional style piece which could be placed as the header of a journalism article. I wanted to show off the famous Australian treat in all its delicious fashion, using lighting to emphasise a feeling of hunger.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/2
Exposure - 1/2500
ISO - 40
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to increase the exposure, white and black balance and the saturation of object colours.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the blue primary levels were also heightened to make the iconic blue and green wrapper pop in the image.
Reflection:
The object positioning, camera angle and natural lighting balance worked well to create an aesthetic display of the Freddo treat. The location presented variables such as heat and obstacles for photography. This method allowed for scouting of exterior shooting locations and have control over post-production lighting elements.
#oneperday2017
PRESS START
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
The games and rides of the EKKA are the main attraction for any child willing to win a prize and find enjoyment. I was motivated to create 'PRESS START' to capture the fun and competitive atmosphere of prize based game, as it portrays a story of either success or disappointment. In an arcade, the lights of the game triggered an impulse to create a composition which places the viewer at the controls of the claw machine; establishing an emotional need to play.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/3.5
Exposure - 1/30
ISO - 250
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to heighten the temperature, exposure, white and black balance, clarity and saturation of the image.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the red primary levels were also heightened to make the machine prizes become more evident in the photograph.
Reflection:
The presence of colour, exposure and aperture settings highlighted the game controls perfectly. No challenges were made present with the development of this image and workflow ran smoothly. This method of photography used the controls as a centrepiece whilst also highlighting the background elements as iconic fixtures through post-production.

WEEK 5
 Shattered Archive - Childhood Memory
Tools/Techniques:  Adobe Photoshop, Pencil, Shading Techniques (Smooth Shading, Directional Hatch and Finger Smudge), Eraser (Transitional Lighting)
Reasoning:
A fear of heights and the immense height of 'The Giant Drop' are highlighted with Shattered Archive. I was motivated by a recent visit to Dreamworld, to have that sudden realisation of "it looked bigger when I was younger". Due to my uncertainty, I created a composition which highlighted this and based my sketch around memory only.
Process:
- A B pencil was used to sketch the general outline and shade darker areas
- A 2H pencil assist with lighter shading to create a 3D effect to the overall image
- An Eraser was used to show reflective surfaces and produce transitional lighting
- The image was inserted into Adobe Photoshop, where sections were cut and resized to show an inconsistent shatter effect
Reflection:
This piece was an experiment of drawing an image based on memory, therefore the overall quality does not match the intended design. A challenge was creating a curved cylindrical object and proportionately positioning elements at a low angle. The method chosen used older techniques and required research into perspective drawing to improve the final output.
#oneperday2017
How To Play: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG - Game Diagram
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Pencil
Reasoning:
As a child, my major obsession was with Sonic the Hedgehog. I was motivated to make this image to share a cherished part of my childhood and teach the viewer how to play a game which brought so much joy. The overall style gains inspiration for the art of the video game and my childhood passion is prominent with the quality of the image.
Process:
- The brush tool and pen tool was used in Adobe Photoshop to develop the coloured graphics which were inspired by elements in the game.
-  Physical illustrations of the character were drawn based on inspiration and were image traced in Adobe Illustrator
- The buttons were made using shape tools, where the Bevel/Emboss blending mode was applied to add a sense of realism
- The font 'PRIMETIME' was used for the title text
Reflection:
- The development of the composition and character sketches turned out to my intended design aspirations. No challenges were present with the development of this composition. This method was iconic to my passion of drawing the character as a child and highlighting this essence in a digital format.
#oneperday2017
TWIX Craving - Favourite Teenage Treat
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom  and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
Throughout my teenage years, TWIX chocolate  was my ultimate snack craving to cheer me up at any time. I was motivated by the chocolate and biscuit texture of the treat and wanted to capture this in a product placement style.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/5.6
Exposure - 1/30
ISO - 1600
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to make adjustments to the temperature, exposure, contrast and white and black balance of the image.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the red primary levels were also heightened to make the label more prominent
Reflection:
- The overall composition was created with precise placement of studio lighting, camera and subject to produce a successful result. The brightness and placement of the subject creates a feeling of hunger within the viewer; achieving its persuasive purpose. No challenges were present with the development of this composition. This method incorporated product placement techniques, which an area which I show great interest in to learn further.
#oneperday2017
Modern Rustic
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
The motivation behind 'Modern Rustic' comes from a recent renovation of my house. Being styled around an antique style, I wanted to create a warm and inviting feel to the pictured room.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/3.5
Exposure - 1/20
ISO - 1600
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to make adjustments to the temperature, exposure, contrast, shadow level,  white and black balance and saturation of the image.
- Image was cropped and the rotation was adjusted to improve visual integrity
Reflection:
The warm visual effect as well as the contrast between objects in the image was executed well. No challenges were faced in the photography and post-production stage of this image. This method allowed for an inviting feeling to be generated through a simplistic development.
#oneperday2017
Sky Blue
Tools/Techniques:  Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
'Sky Blue' was inspired by a random discovery during location scouting, and the suns direct shine between two palm trees creating a tropical vibe. I was motivated to take this photo on the Friday of week 4, due to its iconic cast of light creating a natural silhouette of the trees. It's story representation of the good versus evil allows the viewer to establish a metaphorical opinion.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/3.5
Exposure - 1/20
ISO - 1600
--
- Adobe Lightroom was used to create the blue saturation effect by increasing the exposure and white balance, lowering the temperature and increasing the blue primary levels.
- The image was then imported into Adobe Photoshop, where a white outline and aged photograph overlay to create the postcard effect
Reflection:
The blue saturation of the surrounding sky and subject positioning was an element which was executed well. A main challenge and concern faced the impact of camera hardware when taking a picture of a bright light source such as the sun. This method of randomly timed photography proved that a high quality story composition can be formulated at any point in time.
#oneperday2017
WEEK 6
THOMAS
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
Designing the 'THOMAS' image was inspired by a tutorial activity which experimented with lighting techniques to re-imagine the purpose of an object. I was motivated by the idea of using a practical toy train object and I worked upon the design vision of changing the innocent perspective of the object into an obscure horror themed poster.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/3.5
Exposure - 1/20
ISO - 1600
--
- The photograph was taken in the low-lit environment of the classroom, with a phone flash light acting as a makeshift studio light for a high-angle highlight.
- Adobe Lightroom was used to reduce the temperature,  lower exposure, contrast and increase black balance of the image. White levels of the studio light was heightened to create a low opacity spotlight effect.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the blue primary levels were also heightened to make the label more prominent.
- The image was then imported into Adobe Photoshop, to add horror poster elements
- For the Thomas toy, the eyes were given a red outer glow using the 'Blending Options' tool
- Text was added as in the form of a movie poster, with 'THOMAS' set to the font 'Carnivalee Freakshow'. A bevel/emboss and red outer glow effect was also added to reference the overall creepy visual style.
- The 'COMING SOON' text was set to the font 'PRIMETIME' with a black colour to contrast the blue lighting
Reflection:
The darkened exposure and light effects present an evil undertone, effectively inviting the viewer to show interest towards the composition. Producing the photograph with limited tools was a challenge however, the end result still reflect the initial design intention. The method used targets the strengths of the Adobe platforms and allows for pre--production elements to determine the final result.
#oneperday2017
Gas Mask
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
With the development of 'Gas Mask', the shape and metallic structuring of a drop down fire extinguisher shared visual similarities to the bottom of a gas mask. I was motivated to develop this image, as all inspiration was drawn from a personal observation; creating a feel of full artistic ownership.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/3.5
Exposure - 1/20
ISO - 1600
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Photoshop and was cropped and rotated to be at a horizontal view.
- Red fire valves here selected using the 'Quick Selection Tool' and where changed to a matte black finish with the Hue/Saturation tool.
- In Adobe Illustrator, a vector graphic of a gas mask, excluding the filters, was created and copied into Adobe Photoshop
- The graphic was positioned and placed over the extinguisher using the 'Blending Options' sliders. Blacks of the underlying layer were blended and the opacity was reduced to make the graphic a part of the wall.
- Adobe Lightroom was used to reduce the temperature and exposure whilst improving contrast and black balance of the image.
Reflection:
Blending and interpretation of a gas mask built upon a fire extinguisher has presented a polished composition. The graphic coherently contrasts whilst also adding a sense of depth to the overall image. No challenges were faced with the development of this image. This method showed a range of design platforms to create particular effects and allowed for easy manipulation of visual elements.
#oneperday2017
Extinguished Droid
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
'Extinguished Droid' was inspired by the shape of a fire extinguisher box, where the circular shape looked similar to a robot eye. The wear and weather conditioning added a sense of despair, and motivated the idea of creating a broken down droid.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/3.5
Exposure - 1/20
ISO - 1600
--
- Adobe Photoshop was to cutout the initial photo of a fire extinguisher with the 'Magnetic Lasso' tool
- The robot arm was created using the 'Image Trace' tool in Adobe Illustrator and further modified to fit the physical sizing the extinguisher unit. A black and red gradient was applied before the graphic was inserted into the Photoshop document. The 'Bevel/Emboss' tool was using to apply depth and give a reflective finish.
- Sparks for the broken arm arm were created using a brush set, with the cutout created using the 'Magnetic Lasso' tool
- For the centre eye, a robotic eye was image traced in Illustrator and then given 3D depth with the 'Bevel/Emboss' tool in Photoshop.
- These elements were placed using the 'Transform' tool, with an image mask applied to the robot arm
- The background layer was placed finally, with the temperature enhanced using the 'Camera Raw Filter'
- Finally, a rust overlay texture was applied to give a post-apocalyptic look to the image
Reflection:
Developing the overall composition was a process which ran smoothly and reinvented the visual display of a fire extinguisher unit. A challenge faced was balancing perspective of all elements to look as if the droid is present in the space. This method targeted my strengths with image manipulation however allowed me to develop skills in perspective alignment; to persuasively add depth and realism.

GAME OV-
(The Line Between Reality And The Virtual World)
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
'GAME OV-' was inspired by a recent experience with virtual reality technology and how the real world in transforming into a digital lifestyle. I was motivated to create this piece to work with low clarity settings and turn real-life objects into a video game style.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/3.5
Exposure - 1/20
ISO - 1600
--
- The image was first imported into Adobe Lightroom, the exposure and whilst balance was enhanced whilst the temperature and clarity were lowered.
- This image was placed into Adobe Photoshop over the top of the original photo; using the 'Rectangular Marquee Tool' to mask a division between the two images.
- A pixel brush set was used to erase and add image mask content; creating the transitional effect
- Overlay elements were created using the shape tools in Photoshop with the text being set to the font 'PRIMETIME'. The text was given a drop shadow to supply depth to the element.
Reflection:
A clear division between the virtual world and reality is clearly represented using themed visual elements to enhance its visual ambiguity. No challenges were faced with the development of this composition. This method was enacted with an ideal of simplicity and practising workflow management efficiency.

Yummy! Oven
(Japanese Advertising Style)
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
The excitement and bright style of Japanese Advertising was an area which I was motivated to explore with 'Yummy! Oven'. I was inspired by their unique design elements and wanted to persuasively create an animated character using an open oven.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/3.5
Exposure - 1/20
ISO - 1600
--
- The pen tool in Adobe Photoshop was used to cut and apply a traced outline to the oven. Using the Hue/Saturation tool, the light reflection of the oven was given a pink/green opacity.
- Adobe Illustrator was used to sketch tongue and eyes graphics, placed in Photoshop using the 'Transform' tool with perspective in mind. A Bevel/Emboss blending tool was applied to give depth and realism to the graphics.
- The circular stripe background was created in Illustrator and filled with a purple/pink gradient in Photoshop
- For textual elements, the font 'Japanese' was used to remain iconic with the intended design style.
Reflection:
The Japanese style has been clearly represented with the bright and cartoon flavour which it promotes. No challenges were faced during the development of this composition. This method used current market inspiration to shape design decisions and was effective in producing the design intention.

WEEK 7
Light Bender
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
'Light Bender' was an experimental image which was developed during workshop learning. I was motivated to learn more about shutter speed and ISO settings to create strings of light in an image. This image was inspired by cartoons I would watch as a child, where a form of energy would flow around the protagonists body. A visual effect similar to this was made possible through knowledge of exposure time.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/20
Exposure - 6 sec
ISO - 200
--
- As soon as the snap button was pressed, two lights were moved around the subjects arms by production crew
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to make adjustments and add a blue radiance. Temperature was decreased,  exposure lowered, contrast heightened and white and black balance of the image was lowered.
- Under 'Camera Calibration', the blue primary levels were also heightened to enhance the light blue glow of the image
Reflection:
By increasing the exposure time to 6 seconds, the light trail effect created articulates the extensive ability of camera settings. The challenge was creating identical light trails as production crew were moving at different circumference levels. This method was an effect test, and was the most efficient way of completing the design intention.

Digital Program
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
With the exposure technique polised, 'Digital Program' was a light manipulation which was inspired by the digital world of TRON. The bright streams of light are a prominent effect throughout the movies and I was motivated to recreate similar images using this technique.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/22
Exposure - 6 sec
ISO - 160
--
- As soon as the snap button was pressed, a light was moved around the subjects body outline by production crew.
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to make adjustments and add a yellow radiance. Temperature was made yellow,  exposure lowered, contrast heightened and white and black balance of the image was lowered.
- The image was the imported into Photoshop, where a white spiked light trail was added using the pen tool. A yellow 'Outer Glow' blending mode was applied to mimic the exposure effect.
- A digital grid vector was created via image trace in Adobe Illustrator as an overlay; applied to create a virtual look
Reflection:
The digital aspect of the image was executed perfectly through composition elements. By increasing the exposure time to 6 seconds, the light trail effect captures the TRON aspect. No challenges were faced with the development of this image. This method was an effect test, and was the most efficient way of completing the design intention.

"For True Story"
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom, DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
The motivation behind "For True Story" came from finding two figurines I used to play with as a child, in storage. These toys became a prop of imagination, and attempted to capture an intense battle scene through macro photography settings. I used specific aperture levels to focus on the physical stance of the figure objects. The stance of the objects is clearly viewable however, its unknown intention allows for perspective towards the artistic purpose.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/13
Exposure - 1/100
ISO - 800
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to heighten the warm temperature and exposure, increase contrast and separate the white and black balance of the image.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the red and blue primary levels were also heightened to make the label more prominent
- Using the adjustment brush, the exposure and presence of the fist was increased
Reflection:
Overall, the image captures an abstract intensity through camera focus and aperture levels successfully. A challenge was presented when positioning the figures on a rock pile due to the unstable foreground. This method allowed for a direct focus on photography techniques to develop an the desired intensity.

The Orange of Spring
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom, DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
The colour and shape of the flower pictured, motivated me to produce an image which highlights it unique natural essence. I was inspired by the contrasting orange tinge in collaboration with the organic green and found a sense of harmony when viewing with object.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/5.6
Exposure - 1/60
ISO - 800
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to heighten the temperature, exposure, clarity, saturation, contrast and develop a white and black balance in the image.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the red primary levels were also heightened to make the orange essence more prominent
Reflection:
Through macro photography, the natural beauty and texture of the flower is captured beautifully. No challenges were faced with the development of this image. This method, similar to the previous image, allows for a close attention to detail of the subject.

Twitter
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom, DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
The image production behind 'Twitter' was inspired by the opaque blue of these blown glass decor figures sharing similarities with the social media logo. The reflective natural lighting  motivated me to capture the limited details for further enhancement in post-production.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/7.1
Exposure - 1/60
ISO - 800
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to reduce the temperature, slightly heighten exposure, contrast and white balance of the image.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the blue primary levels were also heightened to improve the low opacity of the blue
Reflection:
Through macro photography, the natural beauty of the decor is captured beautifully and correlations can be made to the logo for Twitter. No challenges were faced with the development of this image. This method, similar to the previous image, allows for a close attention to detail of the subject.

WEEK 8
Green Forest
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom, DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
The natural development of tree texture inspired me to portray its natural beauty and smooth finish. I was motivated by recent skills gained in macro photography, which allowed me to emphasise the lining and rugged crevices of the trunk.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/4
Exposure - 1/30
ISO - 100
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to increase the overall green tint and decrease the temperature. Exposure was slightly heightened, as well as contrast and white balance of the image.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the green primary levels were also heightened to create a natural essence
Reflection:
Individual lines and shape elements highlighted the natural texture of the trunk effectively through zoomed photography. A camera setting presented a challenge during the shoot, with images showing a lower quality of focus. The problem was present in the ISO settings, with the preset at a level which was not applicable to the surrounding environment. This method was the most efficient way to capture a texture in a photographic style, as it used elements such as light and colour to enhance the trunks surface.

Rough Timber
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom, DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
The pastoral style texture of the pictured wooden seat, motivated me produce a wood grain focused image with the the orange tint of natural lighting. I was inspired by the positioning of planks and their unique individuality of layered grain texture; presenting a vibe of man-made historical potential.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/7
Exposure - 1/125
ISO - 100
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to make adjustments to heighten the temperature, exposure, increase contrast and white and black balance of the image.
- The clarity was also increased to make the crevices and grain texture remain relevant.
- To reduce size and edit out unwanted visuals, the image was cropped horizontally.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the red primary levels were reduced to show increased focus on the physical textual line and shape elements.
Reflection:
The image shows a great level of contrast and clear separation of visual elements to reveal the wood grain texture. Taking the image from a birds eye view perspective presented a challenge with equipment shadows being cast into the shot, however this was cropped out in post-production. For the method used, it was simplistic and captured to detail of man-made texture which was required.

Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice!
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
Reasoning:
'Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice' was inspired by common kitchen seasoning to present a powdered and fixated texture. I was motivated to develop this texture as the image presented an opportunity to improve my pre-production artistry.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/11
Exposure - 1/80
ISO - 800
--
- Ingredients such as salt, sugar, pepper and star sprinkles were used to establish the texture.
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to increase the temperature, exposure, saturation, contrast and white and black balance of the image.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the red, blue and green primary levels were also heightened to make the star sprinkles pop in the image.
Reflection:
The physical contrast of the texture and its representation as an image was presented to an experimental standard. A challenge presented itself with the development of the texture and camera focus due to multiple key elements scattered across the canvas. This method allowed for pre-production artistry with food spices to be experimented, however was not the most effective for capturing the texture in an image format.

SNOWBOARD PATTERN
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and DSLR Camera
Reasoning:
With SNOWBOARD PATTERN is was inspired by the urban and sleek style of snowboard graphics and decided to create my own through mathematical patterns. My love of snowboarding and extension of vector graphic skill set motivated me to produce a graffiti styled pattern.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/5.6
Exposure - 1/80
ISO - 100
--
- Adobe Illustrator measurement and array techniques learnt in tutorial sessions were applied to produce a snow themed vector pattern.
- The concrete texture was source via personal photography and used as a backdrop to create an urban style to the image
- The pattern was inserted into Adobe Photoshop with the opacity lowered and blending options slider increased
- Textual elements used the font 'RAINFALL' to blend and add visual cue to the snowboard theme
Reflection:
Being a mathematical pattern, the even separation and repetition element defines the pattern effectively. An iconic challenge was face during the development of the pattern with the initial graphic not saving as a pattern preset. This method tied in new development skills in collaboration with older skills to achieve an urban graffiti image.

Natural Repetition
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Lightroom
Reasoning:
'Natural Repetition' was inspired by the shape, positioning and sizing of leaves on the pictured plant forming a natural pattern. I was motivated by the visual hierarchy, green saturation and satisfying layout; with a need for further enhancement in post-production.
Process:
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/2
Exposure - 1/64
ISO - 50
--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to increase the green tint, exposure, contrast and white and black balance of the image.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the green primary levels were also heightened to make repetitive alignment of the leaves become the central focus.
Reflection:
The green saturation and presence of the natural pattern is clearly evident, which is a compliment to the photography angles and post-production. No challenges were present in the development of this image. This method was simplistic in development, to ensure full viewer attention to the pattern.

WEEK 9
Agent of Chaos
Tools/Techniques: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom
Reasoning:
Agent of Chaos was inspired by the film 'The Dark Knight' showing the clown prince of crime spreading fear and destruction to a city. The inspiration behind this image came from the recent purchase of a Joker Pop Vinyl (pictured) and I wanted to set the scene for this psychotic villain.
Process:
- 5 images were chosen to be manipulated and a 2000 x 1350 px canvas was developed
 --Adobe Photoshop--
-An image of the Joker was used as the focal point, with a layer mask established using the pen tool for simple insertion of background elements
- The image of 'New York New York' in Las Vegas was used as the city backdrop.
- The Ploygonal Lasso tool was used to cut out the fixated structures of the building and the normal Lasso tool selected separate elements
- The cutout was then changed to a green/purple colour to match the scheme of the Joker figure use 'Hue/Saturation' tool
- For the fire effects a mixture of the orange sunset picture, the water fountain picture and a brush set were used.
- The fountain was cut using the pen tool and changed to an orange colour using 'Hue/Saturation'. This element became explosions erupting from the building backdrop.
- For the orange connection between the background and foreground, the orange light of the sunset was cut using the pen tool. This element was then erased with the fire brush set along the outline with the Eraser tool.
- A mixture of orange tones and the fire brush set added elements of fire to the sunset element and buildings to create a chaotic tone.
- The concrete picture was then used as a texture for the ground. This shape was fit using the 'Transform' tool and the opacity was lowered to reduce the brightness.
--Adobe Lightroom--
- The image was imported into Adobe Lightroom to make adjustments to the temperature, exposure, contrast, saturation, clarity and white and black balance of the image.
- Under 'Camera Calibration' the blue and green primary levels were also heightened to develop a blue colour overlay to the image, similar to the move cover of 'The Dark Knight'.
-- Camera Settings
F-stop - f/4
Exposure - 1/2
ISO - 800
--
Reflection:
The final portfolio images turned into a dramatic scene of evil successfully. Manipulating images and establishing them as a new entity worked well and showed clear resource management. A problem was faced with initial conceptualisation, and different images had to be trialled before concluding with the above 5. Overall, the method allowed for creative freedom and a constant stream of ideas to be added throughout development.
