At the beginning of this summer, we were commissioned to paint a mural for a kid's room. The apartment was in its last finishing stages, and the architect had decided to create, for the room of the family's youngest, a dynamic, street style vibe. We found out why when we met our 10 year old client. Alex listens to Looptroop & Non FX, loves extreme sports, skates and plays basketball almost daily, and he was clearly not in for any of the kid's stuff we asked him about. We are positive we watch more cartoons than he does. With all that in mind, we started researching and sketching. Alex provided the lyrics that became the lettering pieces, and we constructed the rest of the visual with "urban outer space" in mind. Diana developed the concept and did the drawings, and Georgian was in charge of applying the two coats of chalkboard paint and doing the lettering. Here's the process.
The initial rendering of the room, stating the black chalkboard wall and white graphics.
Our proposal for the mural. We wanted to create a dynamic composition, with multiple focal points, that would allow multiple reading  and visual flow scenarios.
And then we started painting. Acrylics on Benjamin Moore chalkboard paint.
We sketched with chalk and conte pencil for detail work, and played with everything on our hands.
The red accents had to be placed on top of white sublayers, and most of the fancy linework was done with Posca markers, bless them.
I, Diana, had to crawl like an artistic worm in order to get all the details at the bottom of the mural right.
Worth it.
Mural yoga.
There's something about stippling that soothes the soul, but not the ligaments.
Fruit break and reassessment. Oh, and that basil seed drink is amazing.
Realizing how much easier it is to work with a marker than doing brushwork.
The skater in space was left to the very last, we like to think he ties the room together.
And this is the final project. The wall bars will be added in the central area, and we hope Alex will enjoy looking at his mural and doodling on top of it.
Thank you!
