Collaborating with Daylight: Corporate Breakroom

Our team transformed a large, underutilized dining space into a bustling center for employee interaction at this large corporate campus.

While the space has ample daylight during the busiest times of the day, the well-controlled, glare-free daylight, leaves the space feeling dull on all but the sunniest days. By using aimable spot and flood lights aimed at higher angles (instead of standard downlighting), I created longer shadows and contrast throughout the space, countering the dull evenness of the daylight.

I used decorative light fixtures and many different lighting effects (directed, diffuse, washing, grazing to help define many smaller spaces within the larger areas and help lead you through the space.

In the short days of winter, before and after sunrise, the areas nearest the windows (the brightest at the height of the day) become subdued spaces to begin or end the workday.

By collaborating with the daylight, instead of trying to replace it, I was able to create a space that takes on many different moods depending on date, time and weather.
