Canon - User Research

The project
Client: Canon
Website: Canon marketing site and Canon official store site
Year: 2017
The brief
Myself and another researcher (Becs) at Spindrift decided to initiate a usability study on the Canon websites because there was a lack of real user feedback on the overall project and we felt that it would be a great case study to show the client what value usability testing/general user research can bring to the design process.
What did I do?
Becs and I planned, set up and conducted a full day of usability testing with 5 participants that were recruited using the Canon personas. Mindful that we not only wanted to gain user feedback from the sessions, but that we also wanted to create a client case study from this, we documented as much of the process as we could. We video recorded each session, made time lapse videos, took lots of photos and of course we took a selfie.
The final outcome was a findings and recommendations report for the client and a full, end to end case study that we have since used as an education tool for new starters and as part of pitches to prospective Spindrift clients.
What did I learn?
Be proactive and a champion for user research! Using this research as a case study within the agency gave Becs and I a tool to encourage other members in the Experience Design team to get involved in user research. We demonstrated how effective it can be in the design process and it later kicked off a larger research strategy for the business.
