Plaidworks Brand Identity System

Logo Design for Plaidworks, LLC, 2016

Plaidworks, a start-up company based in San Francisco, requested a simple brand identity system, including a business card and a logo with iconography. The company specializes in engineering 3D printers, and desired a logo that conceptually referenced the dimensionality of printing with plastics.

In my design, I created an intertwining 'woven' pattern that mimicked both ABS plastic being laid, and their monikered 'plaid' motif.

These patterns could be used on the back of the business cards, or where ever ornamental design would be useful for brand identity.

Color Choices

After my client chose from the final draft of icon options, I gave two final color choices. Option B was picked.

Icon Alterations

In this final draft round prior to final designs, my client and I worked on increasing the 'industrial' feel of the chosen iconography. He had requested more of a three-dimensional, 'mechanical' feel, which I translated into the nine different options shown above. The bottom right design was chosen.

Color and Font Options

In this second draft round, my client and I discussed font and color options; he chose from a set of suggested fonts and from six color schemes. We agreed to proceed with one of two color schemes shown in the options above, and he approved font 'Blanc', by Latinotype.

General Design Iteration

In the initial draft round of designs— after my client and I had spoken and decided on pursuing a 'woven' icon— I focused on getting a solid design and pairing that with a few styles of font, in order to gauge the style and mood best preferred. Options One through Four (of six) are shown above. Option One was especially well-received, and ultimately selected.
