ISTD Virus Outbreak

Virus Outbreak
ISTD Competition

The topic I chose for the ISTD competition is ‘It happened on this day’. I chose the date 18th March 2009 documenting and designing the event when H1N1 was announced. Calling it Virus outbreak, it is a set of informational cards that will be used to help promote the World Health Organisation. Targeted towards students and young adults alike it will be used to inform and educate people about viruses and Diseases.
There is a need for the world health organisation to re-invent the ways they distribute their information and publications and needs to cater and attract their audience.
With this set, it’s a more entertaining way to read about different viruses and be well educated on the subject of disease following the events of the H1N1 (swine flu) out break. The content of information includes an introduction to virology, the top 10 pandemics and the recent pandemic threat H1N1. Covering what it is, the path of destruction it took around the world, and an info-graph to easier understands the immense data surrounding the subject. The balance between typography in the front and images on the back of the cards, will allow readers to explore the information and other cards thus re-inventing the conventional textbook creating more of an incentive to pick up the cards. Like many other informational/scientific documents type and body copy are difficult to read due to the mundane placement of copy.By using more a typographic style of design readers will get the full information/story of the subject, without losing focus or bored at the content.
By experimenting with colour, type and size the document promises an enjoyable reading experience. Illustrative demonstration on how viruses spread are made small and a mini-microscope are accompanied to discover the data in the same ways scientist works.
The choice of placing the information on cards was not only to create interest within the reader but also to further explore the notion of the virus breaking loose. Packaged and wrapped inside a caution tape sign, readers will unwrap the document and be presented a large number of cards breaking out. This way readers can take any section read it and pass it on, a lot like the nature of the virus, spreading.
Further more, on the back of some cards will have different sections of the info graph. Readers will need to put them on the right place and order to be presented the information. This resembles how the World health organisation works with the viruses putting together the minute details/information about the viruses to be presented the bigger picture.
