Leading up to the launch of their debut studio album, DJs Alex Unwin and Stefan O’Brien of London based Tough Love were searching for an artist to bring to life their three-part album artwork concept. After exploring the eclectic retouch portfolio of Happy Finish artist Trevor Bittinger, a musician himself, the duo had found their man and were ready to get to work.
The band explained that their upcoming album, Past Present Future would be released sequentially as a three-part EP collection. The album’s cover artwork would be made up of three unique pieces, each weaving into the other while independently telling the story of the past, present, and future.
Having worked on album artwork extensively in the past, Trevor was excited to work directly with the rising musicians, especially given their creative vision. Reflecting back on the initial creative concept, Trevor said, “Alex and Stefan’s vision for the artwork was inspired by the classic looks of 1980’s movie posters, similar to the retro sci-fi aesthetics of films such as Tron or Drive.”
“After doing some initial sketches and exploration, we decided that the artwork would have both fluid motion and data particles moving through all three pieces. In the final image, Stefan and Alex would appear more futuristic AI than human, like cyborg versions of themselves. It was super critical to have the three pieces work as a seamless triptych, so that they could stand on their own, as well as a combined full piece of art. Alex and Stefan were great to work with on this project; it was really enjoyable to be given that level of creative freedom throughout the process.” -Trevor Bittinger, Happy Finish Senior Represented Artist
