Minotaur ~ 100 Poster for Crete Exhibition

In early May I was asked if I would like to participate in an annual celebration of the island of Crete, done as a poster exhibition. Little did I know the old historical story of the Minotaur would serve me well. After some consideration I decided to take part and began the process of idea generation. It wasn’t until after the viewing of the new cult TV series “American Gods” did an appropriate idea come to mind.

After understand and researching some of the history of the island of Crete, I found that the one great mythological story of the minotaur actually originated in the islands past. Doing my usual design and development using several reference images I created the design rough you see below. Recently I had independently purchased a set of Kyle Brushes, and thought this could be a good opportunity to try them out. I wanted to paint something dark and moody.
The image I believe came out well. The only change that was required was the slight reduction in the size of the raised hand. Several parts were also added to the process, like the string dropping down the arm and weaving around the composition. All in all a good piece to do.
The exhibition took place in Chania, Crete on 28th July, 2017. For more information you can visit the site, here.
As with all my art, I tend to do pencil roughs to get the right composition and preparation.
