The concept was derived from Sedgefield's “Slow Town” status, of which they are the only town in Africa that holds this certification. The “Slow Movement” involves slowing down the pace of life in order to focus on more important aspects of living in terms of environmental behavior and sustainability.
Cittaslow signifies and emphasizes on how individuals need to slow down and be more observant towards natural elements that benefit life on earth rather than man-made, mass produced products. This has been emphasised by a folklore style that intends to communicate the tradition of simple life.
