Sustainable Bag Collection

This is a first attempt to create a sustainable bag collection, made from locally sourced wool which was naturally dyed with onion shells, cabbage and beetroot. Using vegetables that could be grown in any garden was important to ensure the possibility of local manufacturing in multiple locations. The wool was partly hand felted and partly felted with a washing machine. Each bag is assembled with screws that can easily be sourced from any hardware store. This assembly method replaces the use of sewing machines with a more sustainable solution.

As a concept, the manufacturing process of the bags could be connected to a community gardening programme, where locals could grow their own vegetables and learn how to use them in multiple ways while they could make a living from selling the products. This system could promote a more sustainable lifestyle and could help isolated communities to grow and develop.
