Costumes of Eastern Europe

In 2016 I was invited to take part in a collective project - Măscărici. All I had to do was chose a nation and illustrate a pair in folk costumes. Having worked with Romanian Folk costumes for ages, I thought, hey, now is my chance to try something different. Let's take a look around, see what the neighbors are wearing. I discovered a world of beautiful clothes, ancient customs and rich cultural exchanges.
I started with the Albanians - the costumes are form the northern mountains.
Then came the Hungarians - costumes from Kalotaszeg.
Then the Serbs (Šumadija).
And the Macedonians (Prilep)
And the Bulgarians (Rhodopes)

The project is ”work in progress” - there are still many more nations to go. If you find this subject interesting and wish to find more about the specific costumes, you might enjoy this extremely well documented tumblr.
