(Re)Interpreting Plečnik
Križanke, Ljubljana, Slovenia
What?
A sequence of interventions in the Križanke complex in Ljubljana, culminating in a new gallery/sculpture garden. Križanke was the final work by the Slovenian architect Josez Plečnik, who was brought in by the city council in 1952 to adapt a derelict monastery into a new venue for Ljubljana Festival. is provides a complex and eclectic context for the conduction of my thesis investigating the aesthetic expression of architecture and its genesis in individual methodologies.
How?
A way of seeing (i): Observation and study via the medium of the sketchbook with particular attention to on location studies as a means of investigating one’s surroundings to stimulate further interest and create a record of my own architectural history to draw from. is method of study draws parallels with Plečnik’s own ‘architectural magpie-ism.’
A way of working (ii): rough a process of expressionist watercolour painting and their translation into three dimensional space through modeling, develop a methodology of incorporating elements from my own personal experiences of architecture (sketchbooks) into my own style as Plečnik did.
