FutureScape: Lost Memories
BRIEF
Propose an original project that uses visual communication and interactivity to re-imagine a place, a community, a segment of history or an event.
WHAT IS IT?
Lost Memories is an interactive mobile application that aims to take the subject of history out of its associated connotations of boredom. Users are able to discover and obtain virtual 'letters' from the past. Such letters are discoverable throughout various Brisbane locations; with each letter maintaining to a historically inspired narrative.
INSPIRATION 1 - CONTENT ANALYSIS
Through the analysis of the Pokémon Go! website, I was drawn to the integration of vivid colour, adventurous emotions and the website's use of composition. Thus, aiding a strong sense of visual consistency and user agency.
INSPIRATION 2 - CONTENT ANALYSIS
Through the Geocaching website, I immediately noticed that the content was quite concept driven; allowing for a heightened sense of usability and user interaction. The consistency of the colour scheme presented themes of earthiness which was reaffirmed through a variation of line and spatial awareness.
INSPIRATION 3 - CONTENT ANALYSIS
I was immediately immersed in the Pine Point website through an opening video that paraded a handwritten text overlay and a stimulating background noise of insects buzzing. The visual design suggested a scrapbook appeal and prompted emotions of storytelling and memories - something that I aim to promote in my own application.
CONCEPT
Lost Memories blurs the boundary between the real and the imagined. It fully immerses the user through the merging of both interactive and digital environments. A heightened user of user agency is prompted in which users interact with concepts that were previously thought as untouchable.
DRAFTING PROCESS 1
Since Lost Memories holds connotations of 'adventure', I experimented with a variety of imagery. I adopted elements that reflected both historical and botanical elements to further enhance concept and user immersion. I chose a typeface that was typical of 20th-century letter writing.
ARTISTIC DIRECTION
I adopted an aesthetic that explored the key concepts as defined in the Lost Memories application. Thus, through an Art Nouveau aesthetic, I was able to achieve such desires.
PROTOTYPE 1
PROTOTYPE 2
PROTOTYPING STRATEGY
I identified a narrative pathway in which the ideal user, from various sample scenarios, undertakes. This pathway undertakes an open plot structure and allows the user to follow multiple possible pathways. I have chosen to develop my application in Adobe Edge Animate. I have outsourced some content in Adobe After Effects.
