The FIA has officially revealed it will continue in its pursuit to incorporate greater levels of cockpit protection to F1 cars after confirming plans to forge ahead with a so-called 'Shield' concept with a view to a 2018 introduction.

Cockpit protection ‘shields’ are set to be introduced next season while this year’s shark-fin engine covers are likely to be ruled out, following discussions this week among F1 racing’s key stakeholders. This concept was designed according these considerations.

Another change agreed by the F1 Strategy Group and F1 Commission was restrictions to engine cover dimensions, which are likely to rule out the shark fins and T-wings – criticised by many for their aesthetics – seen on this year’s cars. Technical regulations will be re-worded in a bid to outlaw 'shark fins' and 'T-wings' for next season
