UWI Seismic Research: Tsunami Smart logo design

TSUNAMI SMART
Logo design for a science-outreach campaign

CDEMA, in conjunction with the UWI Seismic Research Centre, launched a regional campaign called "Tsunami Smart" requiring a clear and easily identifiable symbol to be used on all the education material. The logo developed incorporates the typographical treatment of the campaign name and an avatar. The tick, a visual demonstration of the word "Smart", is juxtaposed with a series of wave crests that are synonymous with traditional graphical representations of tsunamis.
The logo consists of 2 elements, the tick/wave iconic symbol and the typographical treatment of the campaign name. The core elements may be separated as illustrated.

The TSUNAMI SMART “tick”, a highly visual demonstration of the word “Smart”, signifies awareness and the proactive approach of identifying the natural Tsunamis warning signs and knowledge of what to do when these signs occur. The tick, as a universally recognised symbol of approval, reinforces the vision of the programme to educate the public and foster proactive behaviour in identifying and avoiding potential hazards. Incoporated into the symbol is a series of wave crests synonymous with traditional graphical representations of Tsunamis.
The campaign material was tailored for three distinct audiences. A beach sign and newspaper ad were created to raise public awareness throughout the Caribbean. Other materials that feature the logo include the website and TV ads. Brochures were created for the ODPM and National Disaster Management offices to use as a guide for the public. Text-heavy material was converted into infographics and diagrams, and laid out into a series of posters, banners and teaching workbooks for use in regional school curricula.
