For this Final Major Project for the final year, I used my experience from my last year FMP and decided on using a word as a starting point. Having explored weather last year through using the actual elements as my illustrative medium, I chose 'sound' for this project as it was something I was interested in and had a broad enough scope to explore.
Through experimentation, it became second nature to me to use mark-making as a technique to produce imagery that I felt visualised what I was listening to. By doing so, I was therefore creating an entirely new language that was transforming sound into sight. Through development, I found that lining paper worked best to produce my illustrations on because I could carry on going along the paper to interpret the music.
When beginning to produce the final pieces, I decided on choosing three concept albums to visualise, all of which were completely different genres. I started with "War of the Worlds" by Jeff Wayne and during the creation process, I produced a personal key to express sounds into imagery according to the tempo, rhythm, instruments used etc. Next I created "The Wall' by Pink Floyd and then "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by the Beatles. All three of these illustrations work alongside the key, meaning that they are an infographic.
The final pieces were exhibited at the University Centre Southend's campus gallery and D&AD New Blood 2017, held at Truman Brewery.
