Taipei Metro Map Concept



If you look closely at the current version of the Taipei Metro Route Map, you will find the arrangement of the station names is very confusing, and there are at least six combinations of the name and icon of the relative position, among them, the place around Taipei Main Station is the most obvious. I guess it were the consequences which in order to cope with the crowded text space, but the random placing of the station names will make user unable to find it, while obviously the last station's name is at the top, then how the next stop it becomes at the bottom again? A dozen seconds was wasted during the back and forth. Has such an unnecessary opportunity cost in the mass public transport system is really so unavoidable?

When I personally went to the field to observe, the physical route map usually appears on the wall near the gate or on the three-dimensional bulletin board that set on the platform. Users usually walked toward it and looked closely, and the distance was so short that they could gesture with their own fingers. In addition, the field usually had a large number of people in a state of walking, so it was quite unlikely to stay there and watch from the long distances. Therefore, in such a close range, is overly large font size of the information which even causes the layout to be messy necessary? I think it is worthy to be discussed.​​​​​​​

細看現行版本台北捷運路線圖,車站名稱的編排方式十分混亂,名稱及圖示的相對位置至少有六種組合,其中以台北車站周邊最為明顯。猜測是為了因應文字空間擁擠而產生的後果,但時上時下的站名放置導致使用容易者找不到站名,明明前一站的站名在上方怎麼下一站又在下方,一來一往就徒增了十幾秒的浪費,在已十分繁亂的大眾運輸系統中這種不必要機會成本是否真的如此無可避免?

實際至場域觀察,實體路線圖通常出現於進站閘門附近的牆上及月台上的立體佈告欄,使用者多是走近細看,距離甚至近至足以用手指比劃路線。除此之外,場域中通常有大量群眾處於行走狀態,不大可能杵在遠距離觀看,在如此近距離的情況下,過大甚至造成版面混亂的資訊字級是否有其必要性,我想這有待討論。




At the beginning of the design, I deleted the information (which I thought) not necessary, such as the landmarks next to the station icon, the station coding and the difficult understanding legend on the upper right. On the arrangement of the texts, my primary goal is to arrange them in the form of unity, to achieve the purpose that the user can read quickly. After attempting a variety of permutations and experimentations, the 45-degree arrangement that usually used on the single route maps was chosen, without making user feel unfamiliar, the space can be used more effectively than before.

The color lines of the routes were also re-arranged to minimize the number of curves and unify all the bending angles, so that the map is fresh and not messy. In the top right of the legend block, in addition to delete some of the information mentioned above, but also reduce the relatively unimportant proportion of the legend, making the information that users really need more prominent.

設計初期首先刪除了(我認為)不必要的資訊,如車站旁的地標圖示、每站的英數編碼及右上方難懂的車種圖例等。文字編排方面以所有站名的排列形式統一為首要目標,以達快速閱讀之目的。在嘗試多種排列組合並實驗觀看效果後,選定常見於月台廣告牆標示單一路線站名的四十五度角排列方式,在不讓使用者感到過度陌生的條件下同時有效利用圖面空間。

路線的彩色線條呈現方式也經重新安排,盡量減少路線彎曲數量並統一所有彎曲之角度,讓圖面清爽而不雜亂。右上方的圖例區塊除了上述刪除部分資訊外,也降低相對不重要圖例的呈現比例,讓使用者真正需要的資訊更為突出
