“Garden of Heaven” The map of Old Protestant Cemetery (Macau)

Robert Morrison, an employee of the British East India Company (BEIC) proposed to open a cemetery for Protestants through the East India Company, this was prompted by the death of his wife, who was also a protestant. The permission to open a cemetery within the East India Company was granted by the Portuguese. Later on, the right for burials of Protestants was expanded, even non-staff protestants were allowed to be buried within this cemetery. In 1857 new public health regulations were introduced and the cemetery no longer accepted new burials after that. There is one exception made to Sir Lindsay Tasman Ride, who was the last deceased buried in this cemetery in 1977, in honor of his academic contribution to the cemetery.
