Since the advent of the internet, more and more people are getting involved in hacking. Commonly known as gaining unauthorized access to websites, hacking can be used in a positive light as well. These days, hacking can also be used as a way to build websites, and sometimes, these websites can be built extremely quickly in competitions known as hackathons.

Although the word “hack” has a negative connotation to it, there’s nothing negative about hackathons at all. In fact, these competitions encourage creativity among its participants, and often offer scholarships or professional development opportunities to its winners.

Today, hackathons can be found all over the world — and some don’t even require you to leave your desk. Below are a few upcoming hackathons around the world that may be of interest to you.

Where: San Pedro Sula, Honduras

When: July 29 – July 30

As the world’s largest and most diverse global hacker community, AngelHack strives to encourage innovation of tech products, platforms and brands. As an entirely female-owned and female-majority company, AngelHack fosters a unique community of hackers all over the world through their annual Global Hackathon series.

From London to Seattle, and now to San Pedro Sula, the hackathon helps teams of coders, designers and entrepreneurs bring their dreams to a reality through the power of code. Hackers can compete for fun prizes, such as an exclusive invite to AngelHack’s HACKcelerator program or cash prizes.

Where: Online Globally

When: August 6 – August 12

For those who can’t afford to travel, WebHacks provides coders and hackers an opportunity to complete in a hackathon that’s hosted entirely online! Starting on August 6, participants in the hackathon get a week to design and build the best website they can. Throughout the week, coders can participate in mini code challenges to improve their skills. At the end of the week, participants will be judged based on their design and function of the website. Not only will people of all ages get the opportunity to improve their coding skills with WebHacks, but they get to compete for prizes as well.

Where: University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

When: September 15 – September 17 in Waterloo, ON, Canada

As Canada’s largest engineering school, The University of Waterloo engineering department hosts Hack the North, which is Canada’s biggest hackathon to date. With over 1,000 students from around the world participating annually, the hackathon helps students create unique software or hardware in just 36 hours. Participants will have all the support they need with exposure to engineering leaders, mentors, sponsors and hardware components during the competition.

The competition has made a great reputation for itself, considering many big names in tech speak positively about the competition. “There is an undeniable reputation throughout tech of the kind of engineering talent that comes out of the University of Waterloo, says Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit. “The students here are probably going to be the business leaders of this century.”

With so much weight on their shoulders, it may be difficult for participants to get some sleep. However, since this is a 36 hour competition, sleep is optional!
