The Scream from Nature - Munch contest

The Scream from Nature
 5th Scream contest entry
Here is my entry for the #MunchContest.
The picture inverts and abstracts the original to portray nature returning the scream.

I only used the brushes supplied for the contest for this painting.

Below are some images demonstrating the process. I began by painting a couple of quick studies. This was in order to become familiar with the forms in the original, and to get to grips with how the new brushes would handle. Luckily I found them really effective in lending an authentic, textural feel.

From there I developed a page of thumbnail ideas exploring various re-configurations of The Scream. My concept was to abstract and invert (what I feel to be) the themes in Munch's painting, so my quick sketches just played with ways of pulling the image apart.

From there I chose the thumbnail I thought most interesting and effective and developed a fuller work from that.
