Skippy: Spread the Love

Skippy Peanut Butter’s “Spread the Love” ad redesign
2015

This was team project with Chelsea Turton; a fellow designer in my college. We were required to choose an old successful add and redesign it for the modern digital world. We decided that Skippy’s “Spread the Love” ad from 1985.
After we chose what ad we wanted to redesign we sat down and started sketching out different ads, games and website mock-ups. We wanted to think of as many ideas as possible before we locked into just one.
We decided to redesign the Skippy jar and create a nostalgic feel with it to relate it to the parents that were children when the ad first came out. That is why the jar is glass and has an older logo. But we also wanted to make it fun and playful for those parents to share with their children. The glass is also special because it gives it more significance as a limited edition jar.
The jar then would have a code that would lead you to a website designed to display a factious campaign. The website would fulfill the online interactive requirement of the assignment but having an actual object (the jar) as well makes it more memorable. The campaign that we imagined was a fundraiser to end hunger where Skippy would team up with Action Against Hunger and for every jar purchased money would be donated. The original campaign was “Put a little love in lunch” which parents can still do when they buy Skippy for their child but with this campaign they can spread the love to another person in need. Each jar goes to a specific location but we designed an interactive map that contained all the locations which allows the viewer to click around and get involved with the site more. Descriptions for locations were worded in a way that would be easy for a parent to explain to a younger child, encouraging more parent-child interaction and bringing up the idea again of being a loving mother or father. The website mock-ups and colors are related to Skippy’s current website and carried throughout the jar as well to make it a cohesive design.
An extra-added bit was the stickers on top of the jars. It takes love in lunch to the next level and is based off how parents sometimes put little notes in their children’s lunches. The designs on the lid are peel-able stickers that can be placed on sandwich bags or juices, etc.
