Three Warmups to Perform Prior to Running

The former host of You Ought to Know Nashville, Heidi Jewell is a marketing consultant in Denver who functions as a senior account manager with VOCO Creative. In her spare time, Heidi Jewell enjoys maintaining her physical fitness by going for runs around Denver. Here are three useful warmups to perform prior to running.

1. Walking. A gentle walk lasting between three minutes and five minutes offers a low-intensity workout that eases your body out of a stationary mode while warming-up the tendons, joints, and muscles you will use during your run.

2. Leg extensor stretches. To execute the leg extensor stretch, bend your right knee backward, bringing your heel up to your posterior, and bring your right arm back as you swing your left arm ahead of yourself. Hold the position for a few seconds before switching to the other side to warm the hamstrings and thigh muscles.

3. Strides. The 100-meter stride routine prepares your body for running by flooding your muscles with oxygen via your blood stream. Start by jogging lightly for two minutes before gradually accelerating over the course of 100 meters. Decelerate to walking pace and shake out your legs for 90 seconds before turning around and completing the 100-meter stride in the opposite direction.
