First premiered in San Diego in 1986, Into the Woods is a satiric musical written by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine.
Inspired by Bruno Bettelheim's 1976 book, The Uses of Enchantment, the musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy talesand follows them further to explore the consequences of the characters'wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by an original story involving a Baker and his wife andtheir quest to begin a family, and including references to severalother well-known tales. My concept was to present a world loosely based around the 19th century East Asia, primarily inspired by photos by Felix Beato and Charles Wirgmann, some of the first photographers that were part of expeditions that went to the East. Costumes are Korean, Japanese, Chinese-inspired, especially the uses of masks.
These are some of my designs out of the 22 total characters.
